Guest guest
Hi to you all and thanks for your replies. I had my bypass at a private hospital in Melbourne, . I had to self fund it because my private insurance would not cover it. My surgeon, Mr Ian Michell, is wonderful and highly respected here. My treatment at Epworth private was second to none although my procedure was memorable because I was not allowed any morphine after the operation. I just wish there were more people around me who have been through the procedure, because I feel a little like robinson crusoe at the moment. But I have no regrets, just need to focus on the good things to come. I am the third patient to undergo a lap bypass in AU that I know of, but no contact has been attempted with other patients as yet. Kind regards

Guest guest
Welcome . That is pretty amazing that there are so few people around you that have had the surgery. You ask away with any questions. Everyone on this group is so helpful. Why couldn't you have any morphine after your surgery? Are you allergic? Or was this against your doctors policey? I always find it interesting to hear of others peoples experiences with the whole process. Look forward to your future posts and helping in any way I can. Guest guest
Hi Jill My procedure took 6.5 hrs and then I went on a respirator for about 3hs, intensive care for 24 hrs. When I regained conciousness the surgeon told me that there was a respiratory risk if I was given morphine, so I was only allowed " panadol " supps. It doesn't matter now but it was extremely painful for two days or so and uncomfortable for another 2 days. The worst parts were removing the respirator tube (as I could not breath properly) and later removing the drain tube in my side. It's a shame that I was encouraged to spend $3500 on breathing tests and equipment, but it was eventually never used. I do not suffer from sleep apnea although it was suspected prior to the op. Funny how these tests can sometimes be mis-interpreted huh. I spent about $25k - $30k for various tests and the operation. I have been in contact with some patients who have had banding performed, but as yet " bypass-persons " seem non existent here. I think I have done the right thing for myself. I am going to wait and see. (not much choice now) Kind regards Kev
