r> Twenty-five years of tetracyclines for rosacea

r> To the Editor:

<snip>

r> Yearly routine blood studies including liver and kidney function

r> tests have revealed, to date, normal results. At present and for the

r> past 6 months, I have been receiving a maintenance dosage of

r> doxycycline, 100 mg, every other day and have experienced an almost

r> complete clearance of lesions, the aim being to effectively control

r> the condition with the smallest dose possible. Few transient, short-

r> lived papules do erupt on my chin and cheeks on and off, and a mild

r> blepharitis does appear from time to time.

r> In conclusion, in this particular case, the intake of tetracyclines

r> for an average of approximately 8 months per year over a period of 25

r> years has not, to date, produced obvious or grossly detectable

r> adverse effects. This clearly attests to the relative safety of the

r> prolonged use of these medications.

Thanks for your continual trolling for interesting articles for us Matija

- I really appreciate it.

I find this article encouraging for me. I have gotten myself down to 50mg

of doxycycline 3 times a week. Every time that I drift below this amount I

will get papules and pustules return to the nose and more over the normal

acne prone areas of my face. Even at this dose I still get transient

problems as he indicates (although no ocular symptoms) but they are easy

to live with - esp with the wonderful tinted ZincO. I haven't gotten to

anywhere like 25 years, but this article at least makes me think that I'm

not alone with wanting to continue to take them.

As an aside, one option has been to try to see if accutane/roaccutane will

make a permanent difference - i.e might be able to alter the inflammatory

cycle once and for all. This is a risk for me, but feels like it might be

an option for me. I have been given good counsel not to change a regime

that is working well for me. Still sometimes I wonder though.

cheers,

davidp.
