Guest guest
Hi, My name is . I am about two to three months away from upper and lower surgery - well advanced in my orthodontics. I am doing the surgery not really for cosmetic reasons (in fact I am worried about looking different....) but largely for dental advice. I have a great orthodontist and so far i have absolute trust in my surgeon. My main worries are that i am being completely naive about the impact this will have on my life. I hope to have the surgery in early December and return to work after the holidays. but my question- s are - how long should i plan on being out of action for (i will have my jaws wired I think) - just how much care will I need at the time/ and thereafter? I am single and wilst i've got great friends, there's only so much.... And finally, any recommendations for - the best book/source on the subject - the best relaxation techniques to learn to help you cope My company wants to transfer me out of the US in early 05 and i guess i am just beginning to worry that i am not stopping and realising just how big an impact this will have. I realise some of my questions are unanswerable but I sure would like any perspectives. At work they are having a fine old time laughing about my not being able to speak properly. and the joke's just wearing thin! Cheers

Guest guest
Hi , I had upper/lower/genio over 2 years ago now. There are no books out for laypersons, but you will find this group a wealth of information. I gathered together a lot of info on a geocities site (including mine and others' surgery experiences) at http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/ By far, the best relaxation/stress reduction strategies I've employed in my life are regular yoga practice and meditation. There are groups that teach the latter, if you do a google search and look for " Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction " or MBSR, you might just find one in your area. The course I took for that was 8 weeks in length. As for the yoga practice, I started out with a Rodney Yee video, then progressed to a weekly class. I've been doing the yoga for 3.5 years now, and the meditation for 11 months. Both have been beneficial beyond belief for me. I also did a lot of other alternative therapies and you can read about them on the geocities site. I have my own photos posted on oss site 2 (you'll have to become a member there to view them) at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/orthognathicsurgerysite2 under SUSAN FIDDLESTICKS folder. > Hi, > > My name is .
