Guest guest
im currently 21 years old and have a pretty bad underbite/crossbite (its to the point where my lower back tooth is under somwhere between my 2nd to last and 3rd to last upper back tooth) in 7th grade, i was getting pretty bad headaches so i went to an ortho, and the option for surgery wasnt available since i hadnt grown fully yet... so what he basically did is pull my upper teeth out and forward and pull my lower teeth in and backward to match the bite better, which cured my headaches... the thing is he had to pull two of my lower teeth, cuz obviously there was no way he could bring the teeth back in if there were no gaps. that brings me to now, i once again have braces for preop so they're essentially reversing the previous procedure by bringing my lower teeth back out and pulling my upper teeth back in so that when they shift my jaw back, my teeth will align properly... the problem is, since im missing two teeth on the bottom, they can only bring out my lower teeth so much until gaps start forming... am i going to need teeth implants? has anyone had any experience with this? another question i have: when the surgeon does surgery, does he make it so that the upper back teeth and lower back teeth are directly on top of each other? if this is the case, i dont understand why the braces are so crucial to the pre op process

Guest guest
Hi! I went through similar experience as you... I'm also 21, & had orthodontics for the 1st time from 1997-1999. I was told by my ortho that in order to correct my crossbite (causing me lopsided smiles...) & slight underbite, orthgnathic surgery is the only solution. At that time, I was only 14 (being young & not knowledgeable about the op), I told my ortho that I didn't want the op. So, my ortho had recommended orthodontics, similar to yours, to make the upper & lower teeth fit as much as possible. I also had 2 extractions of the lower teeth. A few years later when I made a decision to go for the op, I had 2nd time ortho treatment to prepare for the op (to reverse the previous procedure). A few months after having pre-op, gaps became apparent on the bottom, like I'm having 2 missing bottom teeth. And the surgeon told me that I'd need implants to fill up the gaps. <when the surgeon does surgery, does he make it so that the upper back teeth and lower back teeth are directly on top of each other?> In my case,yes... <if this is the case, i dont understand why the braces are so crucial to the pre op process> I'm a layperson in this field, but from what I know about the procedure, pre-op braces are necessary so that after you've had the op, you'll have a proper bite. It's necessary for the front teeth to be able to fit well too, not just the back teeth. > im currently 21 years old and have a pretty bad underbite/crossbite > (its to the point where my lower back tooth is under somwhere > between my 2nd to last and 3rd to last upper back tooth) > > in 7th grade, i was getting pretty bad headaches so i went to an > ortho, and the option for surgery wasnt available since i hadnt > grown fully yet... so what he basically did is pull my upper teeth > out and forward and pull my lower teeth in and backward to match the > bite better, which cured my headaches... the thing is he had to pull > two of my lower teeth, cuz obviously there was no way he could bring > the teeth back in if there were no gaps. > > that brings me to now, i once again have braces for preop so they're > essentially reversing the previous procedure by bringing my lower > teeth back out and pulling my upper teeth back in so that when they > shift my jaw back, my teeth will align properly... > > the problem is, since im missing two teeth on the bottom, they can > only bring out my lower teeth so much until gaps start forming... > > am i going to need teeth implants? has anyone had any experience > with this? > > another question i have: > > when the surgeon does surgery, does he make it so that the upper > back teeth and lower back teeth are directly on top of each other? > if this is the case, i dont understand why the braces are so crucial > to the pre op process

Guest guest
See that's the weird thing... The ortho is insisting that I don't have to get implants... but i have a pretty bad underbite (about a whole tooth difference in space between my back upper and back lower tooth), but because my lower teeth point inwards because of the extractions, there's not much difference in space between the front upper and front lower. So when the the ortho tries to match my back teeth together, i think ill have a HUGE overbite in my front teeth... is my ortho an idiot? should i be worried? > > im currently 21 years old and have a pretty bad > underbite/crossbite > > (its to the point where my lower back tooth is under somwhere > > between my 2nd to last and 3rd to last upper back tooth) > > > > in 7th grade, i was getting pretty bad headaches so i went to an > > ortho, and the option for surgery wasnt available since i hadnt > > grown fully yet... so what he basically did is pull my upper teeth > > out and forward and pull my lower teeth in and backward to match > the > > bite better, which cured my headaches... the thing is he had to > pull > > two of my lower teeth, cuz obviously there was no way he could > bring > > the teeth back in if there were no gaps. > > > > that brings me to now, i once again have braces for preop so > they're > > essentially reversing the previous procedure by bringing my lower > > teeth back out and pulling my upper teeth back in so that when > they > > shift my jaw back, my teeth will align properly... > > > > the problem is, since im missing two teeth on the bottom, they can > > only bring out my lower teeth so much until gaps start forming... > > > > am i going to need teeth implants? has anyone had any experience > > with this? > > > > another question i have: > > > > when the surgeon does surgery, does he make it so that the upper > > back teeth and lower back teeth are directly on top of each > other? > > if this is the case, i dont understand why the braces are so > crucial > > to the pre op process

Guest guest
Hi!! I think it's weird too, but perhaps, your ortho / surgeon will be able to explain the situation to you. Is your ortho working closely, or frequently in touch with your surgeon throughout your pre-op stage now? It's crucial for the ortho to be fully aware of what kind of procedure is the surgeon going to do, so that s/he will be able to correctly prepare you for op. Cheers! > > > im currently 21 years old and have a pretty bad > > underbite/crossbite > > > (its to the point where my lower back tooth is under somwhere > > > between my 2nd to last and 3rd to last upper back tooth) > > > > > > in 7th grade, i was getting pretty bad headaches so i went to an > > > ortho, and the option for surgery wasnt available since i hadnt > > > grown fully yet... so what he basically did is pull my upper > teeth > > > out and forward and pull my lower teeth in and backward to match > > the > > > bite better, which cured my headaches... the thing is he had to > > pull > > > two of my lower teeth, cuz obviously there was no way he could > > bring > > > the teeth back in if there were no gaps. > > > > > > that brings me to now, i once again have braces for preop so > > they're > > > essentially reversing the previous procedure by bringing my > lower > > > teeth back out and pulling my upper teeth back in so that when > > they > > > shift my jaw back, my teeth will align properly... > > > > > > the problem is, since im missing two teeth on the bottom, they > can > > > only bring out my lower teeth so much until gaps start > forming... > > > > > > am i going to need teeth implants? has anyone had any experience > > > with this? > > > > > > another question i have: > > > > > > when the surgeon does surgery, does he make it so that the upper > > > back teeth and lower back teeth are directly on top of each > > other? > > > if this is the case, i dont understand why the braces are so > > crucial > > > to the pre op process
