I suggest the acronym CRAG for four critical actions to reclaim America's ED's to restore medicine's proud scientific excellence and profitability; and to protect Americans against bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infectious diseases that illegal aliens carry across our borders. .....Close America's borders prevent illegal entry with fences, high tech security devices and troops re-deployed from Germany and South Korea. Guest guest
This is one of the Google citations, the first one to appear when you do a search on the article referenced by . Those of you associated or familiar with medical schools may be aware of the White Coat Ceremony used as an initiation as students transition into their clinical training. The author of the above referenced article while not a physician may have confused the white coat with a white hooded robe. The article was more fitting to a KKK or some other supremacist publication than a medical journal. The author is trained in the legal profession based on her generic title (esq.) but may not be licensed. I am suggesting that this person should be held liable for legal and social malpractice. What is more depressing than the article being published is that a journal representing the medical profession whose code of ethics abides to the principle of “do no harm” would accept it for publication. While this is not the first time such an article appears in a public forum, it is the first time I’ve seen such an inflammatory and racist non-scientific article published under the guises of science/medicine which will most certainly give credence to the evidence-based decision-making model being used by the present administration in DC. Guest guest
The good news is that this journal is not deemed worthy of subscription by any of the major university libraries (especially those with top ranked med schools) except Columbia. WORLDCat lists it as being received in only 33 libraries in the world. Letters to the editor (under 500 words) can be sent to: aaps@... And the mission statement of the journal is really about promoting a set of politics about medicine than about good medicine: " Mission Statment [sic] The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, the official, peer-reviewed journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), is committed to publishing scholarly articles in defense of the practice of private medicine, the tenets and principles set forth in the Oath of Hippocrates, individually based medical ethics, and the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship. The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons is dedicated the pursuit of liberty, free markets, and integrity in medical research, particularly research impacting on current socioeconomic and political issues that affect policy in general and medicine in particular. Political correctness, dogmatism, and orthodoxy will be challenged with logical reasoning, valid data, and the scientific method (when applicable) in the pursuit of free inquiry, the free exchange of ideas, and the eternal quest for truth. The will strive to counteract misinformation, correct errors of fact and logic in the medical literature, and to defend patient oriented, individually based free-market medical care " ( " Correspondence. Guest guest
The authors of “The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life” (Herrnstein & Murray) are probably loathing in grand scale if they have read the article under debate by at least three of us in this listserv. The core thesis of the Bell Curve is that any federal investment in programs to serve minorities was a waste of the national resources since class structure was more a function of the natural bell curve distribution of intellectual ability, of which Asians, African Americans, Native Americans and Latinos were less endowed when compared to the Euro-American. In defense of the author and the profession that publishes the journal, I was associated with a project in the early 1990’s funded by a national foundation to address the ethical dissonance that medicine was being confronted with as reported in the general media and professional publications. Two findings are worth noting, as they are relevant. First, the incidence of unethical behavior among college students as evident by the cheating (self-reported) was highest and for the most part accepted without a sense of remorse among students pursuing careers in business, law, engineering and medicine. Secondly, empathy and social justice, essential human qualities to abide by one of the principles of the Oath of Hippocrates – to do no harm, decreases among physicians in direct proportion with the ascension into specialized medicine. The moral of the story; Greed, Power and Arrogance (GPA) run rampant and are food that feeds the culture of certain professions that unfortunately play significant influence in the institutions that are to protect our national and global welfare. This reality will never change unless those who truly care are willing to do the work, if it is not too late.
