Emotional Madness!

Hey everyone.

I have been reading messages on this site and thank you so much for

all the help you have provided me! I am all ready for my surgery. I

have rearranged my room so everything I need is around my bed, I

went shopping for my liquid diet, got cook books, and zip-n-squeeze

bags. I have been so busy finishing my fall classes, working, and

getting everything together for my surgery (dec. 1st) that reality

has not set in that this is going to suck!

I am not good with pain at all! I went in for my doctor check up pre-

op type appointment and they drew blood from my arm (for the first

time in my life) and I almost passed out. My wisdom teeth were in

my bone and my oral surgeon, that is doing my surgery, took them

out. I did not do very well with that how do i think i'm going to

get through having my lower jaw bone cut and moved forward.

I am starting to have anxiety about my surgery. Most of the people

on this group sound like real happy-go-lucky people all the time

(which is good) but i am a really mellow person, but if i am really

uncomfortable, I freak out.

Is there anyone sort of like me out there? How can I help myself be

positive through this whole thing?

I'm so scared about relasping. What if I go through this all and my

jaw goes back again? it will all be for nothing.

thanks for reading

1. Figure that you won't relapse. As Fiddly has often posted:

Don't worry until you have something to worry about.

2. Most people who have this surgery do not have a lot of pain. You

may have frustration -- although it sounds as if you're having lower

jaw work only, in which case it's not likely that you'll have the

congestion and major swelling usually associated with work on the

upper jaw.

3. Don't assume that " it's gonna suck. " Mine didn't.

4. In my experience, getting the wizzies out was a lot worse than

the jaw surgery for lower advancement, and even a bit of a sideway

slide. Don't figure in advance that it's gonna be awful. It may be

better than you expect.

Try to focus on that...

And come here whenever you need us.

I agree with Cammie except on 2 points:

1. I can't take credit for this quote, it's from my regular doc, but

it's very, very true. One can waste a lifetime worrying. What's

really happening right now? That's what's important. Plan, yes, but

deal with reality, not projections.

2. Major swelling associated with upper jaw surgery? No, I don't

think so. Certainly it didn't happen to me, and I had

upper/lower/genio. It does vary from person to person. There are a

few things you can do to minimize swelling and I'd encourage you to

investigate them and decide whether or not they might be right fo you

(MLD therapy, homeopathic remedies).

Everyone gets a little bit (or a lot) frightened and nervous about

this surgery, that's quite normal. Try to think of the expertise of

these people, this is their life's work and I'm sure they will take

the best possible care while helping you through all of this. If

you're really freaked out, why not talk to your regular physician and

see if there's something that might help for the short term? Me? I'm

a big proponent of meditation as a means of calming the mind when it

gets emotionally upset.

You might find some useful suggestions on the geocities site at

http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/

And as Cammie says, here's the right place to come and talk about it.

Try to stay positive if you can. Things are not usually as bad as you

think they'll be.

Hi Ladies,

I had upper, lower, and a genio. I was hardly swolen and the doc was amazed.

This is what I recommend:

Pray, pray, pray. And have everyone you know pray. God is good and He answers

prayer.

Ice, Ice, Ice! Keep ice on you 24 hours a day. When in the hospital, tell the

nurses to wake you up and change your thing on your face that has the ice in it.

When you get home, wake up and change your ice all the time. It worked for me!
