I'm in pretty sad shape with my iron and probably looking at iron

injections

or IV iron.  Has anyone had experience with both ?

Terry, Hi I can give you a little information about this. Had lap rny Aug.99.

After about a year iron levels dropped, tried pills niferex forte, etc etc.

No good. Iron levels about 7. Then went to weekly iron injections once a week

for about 6 months. Did it in the deep muscle of the hip, levels went to 12

and have stayed there. After the 6 months I went to monthly injections till

last month. My ferritin levels which are the iron storage levels were

extremely low. Doc felt that although we were keeping the iron levels ok we

were swimming upstream so to speak because my iron storage levels were about

zero after two years of the shots. I had no problems with any reactions of

the shots only a little bruising. I sure could tell when it was time for one

though because I would get really fatiqued. I had my first IV iron infusion

last week. No bad reactions although they are very careful with a small test

dost the first time which takes a half an hour. If you are ok after the 1/2

hour they go slowly with the rest. It took 4 hours in the docs office and

they have to have supervision with a doctor in the the house while it is

dripping. Nurse told me some reactions could be a low grade fever, chest

pains or headache. These would usually come after the first hour or so, maybe

faster. Main thing is they monitor blood pressure, heart beat etc. very

carefully at first test dose. I was fine, but everyone is different of

couse. Doc is going to recheck in a month, if ferritin is ok then I will be

ok for three or four months and then another IV. It doesn't hurt, just boring

to sit there for 4 hours. Hope this helps and good luck. I can tell a

difference in my energy level, not hyper just more normal and don't crash in

the afternoon anymore.

Dr.

353/180 regained to 220 and working on going down again....it's so hard!
