Hi and welcome!

1] You'll find out what works for you. I could breathe a little

through my mouth, a little through my nose. Just don't panic post-op,

you'll be able to breathe.

2] Try not to yawn, sneeze (support the jaw if it's not supported by

wires or bands). A yawn is actually an uncontrolled opening and is

not good for you at any time. Swallowing can be painful in the first

few days/week post-op because of the tubes they will use during

surgery. Sipping cold water will help.

3] Ask this question at the hospital. They should advise you. I was

told no showers for 2 weeks, but that just wasn't going to happen. I

actually had a bath when I came home from hospital and washed my

hair, just to feel better. My husband helped me in and out of the tub

(you don't want to fall over, PLEASE!) and he washed my hair for me

while I was sitting in a bath chair. I took showers in the chair

until I felt I was not dizzy and had more strength. If you've had

upper surgery, you should keep your head UP.

4] Depends. I used the syringe for a week until I was allowed to

remove my bands for eating, then I used a rubber-coated baby spoon.

5] Wax is good, silicon (brace relief) is better. You can't avoid the

cuts that may happen during surgery, don't put it on for surgery!

6] Ask your dental hygienist or ortho. I tried amosan, which is a

powder you mix with water, for the cheek cuts.

Hope that helps. Good luck with your prep! Check out this site too

As with most things involved in these procedures, the answers vary a

lot from person to person.

Some people who have had a lot of work on the upper jaw have

congestion for a week or so post op. Breathing can feel difficult for

them -- and if they have nose procedures and have their noses packed,

then the air has to come in through the mouth. While people who are

wired shut can get claustrophobic about it, I've never heard of

anybody even fainting, much less being damaged by not getting enough

air in .

Some folks wake up and find that for the first time in their lives

they can breathe through their noses, and smell things they've never

smelled before.

I did not feel pain from yawning or sneezing, but I didn't have upper

jaw surgery. I did have a really sore throat for a week or so, as a

result of the intubation.

How long will you be wired shut, vis a vis the syringe? And you might

want to have a look at the ZipnSqueeze bags, too. As well as the jaw

wrap.

Ask your surgeon about the waxing, but I can't imagine that such

would be a good idea. Your surgeon will need to make cuts -- and

maybe even cut the archwires -- and I wouldn't think he'd or she'd

want wax in there getting in the way.

Best,

Cammie
