I just had my orthognatic consult. The dr. told me that there would

be a small external incision made on either side of my face. All of

the research I see indicates no external scars. What are your

experiences with this? external scars?

I can't talk for all, but my own experience was that my surgeon

suggested the external incisions at first. I " negociated " with her and she

agreed to use a different method, without having to make any kind of

cuts on the outside of my mouth. Even if she assured me there would

be no permanent visible sign, I surely didn't want to test this... ;-)

I had the following external incisions;

one on each side under the chin near the neck for drains - these

have gone now (6 months post op)

one where they had to put a screw in from the outside through my

cheek - all gone now

one under my chin as there were complications - its still there, but

most people don't get to have one of these.

All the normal incisions in my experience have been small and

unnoticable after 6 months (some went in less time).

Yeah...a lot of surgeons are able to do the surgery without making

any external incisions. But I was one of those who had to get an

incision on each side of my face. My surgeon said that they need to

do it because it's the only way they can get the screwdriver in to

tighten the screws at the right angle. The scars aren't very

big...maybe a quarter inch...in the middle of your cheek. The

incision on my left side healed very quickly with leaving much of a

scar. But the one on my left side took longer to heal because I had

an infection on the right part of my face after surgery. I healed

fine...but I have a raised scar there now where the incision was.

And most people say they don't notice it. I guess it looks more

like a blemish in my face. But I see it everytime I look in the

mirror. In the grand scheme of things...it's totally not even an

issue. I still would have had the surgery even if it left a much

larger scar.
