Guest guest
There is something called a positioner, and it has a pretty unpleasant reputation, except that it works really well. As my ortho's assistant told me, " It works really well for patients who can tolerate it. " I've heard stories of pain unlike any ortho pain from the thing. Cyn had one, and called it " Old Man Rubber. " I think one's tolerance grows as one uses it, as with most of this stuff. My ortho spoke of giving me one, once, I sorta curled my lip, and he said, " Oh. You have problems breathing through your nose, don't you? Maybe we should try something else. " I immediately backed off, and told him that of course I would do my best to use whatever he thought best, but I was mighty glad to see the nice little acryllic retainers when he brought out my box! If you wish, tell your ortho that someone mentioned a positioner to you, and ask him whether he thinks it would work better for you. I dunno exactly when they are and aren't appropriate. I do know that one local ortho (not mine) gave a friend's child the option of having a positioner and getting the braces off sooner. She did, and I think she somewhat regretted it, although far as I know, she has become accustomed to wearing it, now. Guest guest
Oooooh, I had the rubber positioner you're talking about when I was about 16 and had just finished up my original orthodontic work! I hadn't realized that was considered a one-piece retainer, too - I was imagining two of the acrylic retainers - top and bottom - connected to one another in a single contraption. I'll definitely ask my ortho about the positioner, but I remember it wasn't that effective for me back in the day (and I scared people a lot whenever I wore it).... Thanks for your help!
