Guest guest
Yes I also had this. Are you wearing elastics bands, those can give relief. It could be because of the fact that your joints need to find their correct position again, or that there is still some swelling there. It went away after a while with me but I would inform your OS about this. Try to swallow more " in the back " if that makes any sense, I also had trouble trying to find out how my " new mouth " was working (and am still learning at exactly 3 months post-op today!). Guest guest
Jen, I'm sorry to hear this, I hope it isn't that much pain. I have still been sore in the mornings, so even though the muscle relaxers may be working somewhat for me, I must still be clenching. I also get sore from eating or talking too much, anything that requires a lot of use of the muscles. I'm only taking any pain medication (advil) in the mornings for pain. I do notice myself clenching during the day, but only very sporadically. I hope your OS can solve this for you! Let me know how it goes. Remember, your only 2 weeks out, it could still be very normal to have these kinds of pains, so try not to get too worried until you know there is something to worry about (I know, easier said than done). Guest guest
Thank you! I am wearing bands, but they are very loose. My molars don't connect yet either, so I wouldn't be at all suprised if I'm not biting in the right place. -Jen > > Hello! > > > > I'm going to see my OS this afternoon, but I'm getting really > worried. > > Over the weekend the pain started coming back again, only moreso in > > the joints than where the cuts were made -- though, those hurt too. > > I'm guessing it's because I've been clenching, both when I'm > sleeping > > and when I'm awake. Guest guest
Hi Kim! Today is worse than it has been, but Ibuprofen seems to help.. That's a good sign I think. I also have been getting sore from talking and eating still as well. It just seems to have gotten worse in the last few days and the ear thing is totally new, it's a different kind of pain that the ear pain I had during the first week, I guess that's why I'm worried. I'm doing my best to not think about it until I see the OS this afternoon. I'll keep you posted on what the OS says about it. Guest guest
Well, he said that I'm clenching because of the elastics, and that it'll go away as things start coming together. He's not at all concerned that I'll hurt myself by doing it.. So, as long as the Ibuprofen keeps working, I'm supposed to take some when I wake up in the mornings, massage my face/jaw muscles, and do some stretching exercises. One of the stretches he told me to try was to open as wide as I can every morning. I asked him if I should take the elastics out to do it and he said that it didn't matter. I'm kind of confused though, I can open much wider than my elastics allow me to. How is stretching with elastics on supposed to help? I suppose it could be to help me gain muscle strength? He seemed really rushed today, he had me in and out of there before I even thought to ask him about getting back to exercising -- I want to know if I can do more than just walk yet. Not really a big deal, really, walking is about all I seem to have time for right now anyways. ~Jen > > > Hello! > > > > > > I'm going to see my OS this afternoon, but I'm getting really > > worried. > > > Over the weekend the pain started coming back again, only moreso in > > > the joints than where the cuts were made -- though, those hurt too. > > > I'm guessing it's because I've been clenching, both when I'm > > sleeping > > > and when I'm awake. Guest guest
Hey there! Well, I guess it is good to know that it is nothing out of the ordinary, right? Are you taking your elestics out at all yet? I have been taking mine out since Monday for eating and cleaning. On Tuesday, I stopped by my OS's office because he didn't give me any extra rubberbands and mine were gross after being in for the first two weeks. Well, the new rubberbands hurt! They don't hurt my teeth or jaw, but they are rubbing my cheeks and scratching them all up. It is a bit better today (I haven't been talking as much today either, now that I have told everyone at work about how my surgery went, I don't have to tell the story over again). The clenching is actually caused by the elastics? How tight are they? I'm hoping that my clenching goes away once all my orthodontic work is over. I'm not sure if I did it before it all started or not, but I'm hopeful it'll stop. Guest guest
Yes, I've been taking mine out to eat and clean since I got the looser ones a week ago. They're not tight at all - I can open just over an inch now with them on. I have a ton of extras, and I notice that they do hurt at first when I change them, I think the old ones get stretched out and the new ones feel tighter at first. I also had that problem with them rubbing my cheeks, but I think I'm getting used to it now. I'm not sure how they would cause the clenching really, since they are so loose. I don't know if I've always been a clencher, but I first noticed I was clenching for the first couple weeks after getting my braces adjusted as well. I wouldn't stop until my bite had settled after each adjustment -- the worse my bite, the worse the clenching. So, I think that maybe that's contributing as well. I start my orthodontic work again on Monday, so hopefully getting started with bringing my molars back together will help. ~Jen > > > > > Hello! > > > > > > > > > > I'm going to see my OS this afternoon, but I'm getting really > > > > worried. > > > > > Over the weekend the pain started coming back again, only > moreso in > > > > > the joints than where the cuts were made -- though, those > hurt too. > > > > > I'm guessing it's because I've been clenching, both when I'm > > > > sleeping > > > > > and when I'm awake. Guest guest
Lucky you! I wish I could start back with my ortho work sooner, but my she doesn't want to see me until 6 weeks after the surgery, so it's not until Oct. 12th. I didn't really ask why so long, I think it is her standard time. I guess it's just the preference of the individual OD from what I've read on here. Oh well. That has kinda been my theory on the clenching too (the bite) because I notice it more after an adjustment I also add a little grinding too because I try to clench where my teeth don't fit and then move them, while clenched, to where they do. I have a ton of extra rubberbands now too, but I almost wish I would have kept the old ones - they didn't hurt! Me and my cleanliness issues. . . ah well. I have to get used to them anyway, I think my OD has more in store for me!
