It is important to remember while progressing on the diet that there are other reasons why vomiting may occur. A specific food should not be avoided forever because vomiting occurred once after eating it. The food may be tried again after waiting several days. Maybe the food was simply eaten too fast. The following is a list of foods that may be used as a guide for the diet progression. Categories of foods Foods that are allowed Foods that may be difficult to tolerate Foods to limit for best weight loss Beverages Water, flavored water, tea, sugar-free popsicles, coffee, club soda (later), diet soft drinks (later) Milk may not be tolerated. (Surgical anatomy may create lactose intolerance) High calorie drinks: fruit juices, whole milk, milk shakes, alcoholic beverages Breads Dry, coarse, or well-toasted bread, crispy crackers or baked tortilla chips. Include these only for taste. Minimize carbohydrates. Soft breads that become gummy, breads w/nuts, seeds, or dried fruit Sweet breads or Danishes, Donuts All carbohydrates should be minimized for best weight loss. Cereals All cooked and dried cereal, without added sugar All cereals with added sugar. Dessert Frozen yogurt, low-fat gelatin sherbet, fruit pies, low-cal puddings (minimize these) Any dessert with nuts, dried fruit, seeds, or coconut All Fats All, in small amounts Fried foods with a hard crusty coating All Fruits Fresh, canned, frozen, or cooked fruit. Be cautious with apples, grapes, other fruits with peel or skin Fruits with a core, seeds, or skin; whole citrus fruits (i.e. grapefruit, oranges). Think of fruit as the new dessert. Avoid fruit juices - very high carbohydrates. Meats All are OK, but seafood is usually best tolerated, poultry next, and red meats may be difficult. Tough meats or those with gristle. Some patients may not ever tolerate red meat. None Potatoes, Starches Boiled, mashed, or baked are well tolerated, BUT note that starches work against weight loss Potato skins, sweet potatoes, rice, noodles All starches interfere with weight loss. Soups All. However do not use soup as a regular food because it can be too easy to eat. Those with large pieces of meat. Creamed soups, unless made with non-fat milk.
