surgery 12 hours away?

I just had an orthodontic consultation in which my ortho told me

that I need upper AND lower jaw surgery (to fix my " severe "

underbite), as well as a possible upper jaw expansion.

My orthodontist referred me to a surgeon (Dr. Turvey, which may be

spelled wrong) at Chapel Hill University, North Carolina,

approximately 12 hours from my home in New York! He's supposedly

one of the best in the country, and my ortho " wouldn't feel

comfortable " referring me to anyone other than THIS surgeon for a

problem of my extent. He's sent all of his patients there that need

more than a simple operation.

My question: Is this even feasible?! I'm a college student, so I

will probably have my surgery over the summer. I don't know how

many pre-op and post-op appointments are normally necessary, but

travelling THAT far seems insane. I keep thinking that there has to

be someone equally qualified to do this that is closer. I'd love

opinions from anyone...can this be done? I know my ortho is biased

because he was trained by this surgeon, but he's not wrong in saying

that this surgeon is excellent. And I feel very comfortable knowing

that this surgeon performs over 400 operations of this type a year,

and that he is highly recommended. I'd like to research surgeons

that are closer, but can my ortho refuse to treat me if I don't use

his one and only recommendation?

Thanks for taking the time to read this! - O.
