I got an email earlier from a woman in san diego who was told by her

surgeon the opposite thing. He said that they were going to move

away from the open b/c it came with more risks. She said that they

have patients scheduled until April already for the lap. I don't

know what to think but I am calling around on Monday. I will let you

know more:)

Sue,

I believe in this case (as in all others) it depends on the doctor as

far as time. I've heard both that Lap is longer and Open is longer.

However, in the case of my surgeon, he says that Lap always takes a

shorter amount of time because there isn't as much to cut. My surgery

only took 45 minutes and was a textbook case. I know I was very lucky

but I just wanted to point out that different doctors have different

opinions on how long things occur. :)

Hello!

I have Tricare Prime as well. And the surgeon I am seeing only does

Open Surgery. I was told by my surgeon that the risks are minimal

with open surgery. He says there is a 1% chance of leakage through

open, compared to 3%chance with lap. And from what the Dr's nurse

says, they never have any problems with Tricare approving this

surgery. But then again it may depend on what region you are in to.

Congrats in getting approved. I am on my way to being approved as

well. I am doing my diagnostic testing right now. Got it all done

except the Upper GI and the sonogram, and the MMPI. So I am almost

there.

Take Care,

Chasta

You recover so much quicker with lap and it is less danger and yes the doctor

can see everything well with the lap also. I was shopping in 5 days and one

and a half weeks after lap I could not even tell that I had surgery and with

open you are out of commission about 4 weeks and can go back to work in 6.

With lap you can go back in 1 to 2 weeks depending what you will be doing. Open

is a lot more traumatic to your body. I have had 4 major surgery when I was

younger than I am now [59 years young] and let me tell you this lap was a walk

in the park compared to the open surgeries I have had.
