Guest guest
Just a quick FYI: I've been told that the clear plastic retainers can also be used as bleaching trays. I think they're basically the same thing. Guest guest
I'm here to testify that they can indeed be used as bleaching trays. But there are some caveats. I did it that way, and I have a big silver amalgam filling in one tooth (fortunately toward the back of my mouth). I wondered for a long time why I had that black spot on my otherwise clear retainers. Asked my ortho -- " Hey -- that tooth hasn't been anywhere the rest of them haven't gone! " -- Finally my general dentist said, " Do you remember that we did some bleaching, using the retainers as trays? You have a big silver amalgam filling in that tooth, and it stained the retainer. " But otherwise they worked fine. I suspect that the Zoom! results are more dramatic, just because they're so quick. but my Opalescence took me from the bottom end of the picture to near the top, and I was tickled. The other thing you have to be careful about is irritation of the gums, because the retainers generally fit more closely than the bleaching trays, I was told. Guest guest
Thanks for the details, Cammie. Good to know. Fortunately, all my fillings are composite, so I should be OK.
