Guest guest
you are welcome here -- and there have been some other moms who have posted here, from time to time. If your daughter wishes, she would also be welcome here. Many people find that the surgery relieves the headaches. A few find that it does not. It's sort of a " you pays your money and takes your chances proposition. " I can tell you that it is not at all unusual for the bite to worsen before surgery, because the teeth are moved into positions congenial with the post-op bite. All of us are green when we start out with this stuff, so don't worry about that. I'm not clear from your post: is your daughter to have upper, lower, both, genioplasty (work on the chin)? If so, forward, backward, upward, rotation? Do you know? There's a list of questions many people have found helpful in preparing to see the surgeon. One in the files or links here, and one in Fiddlesticks' most excellent Geocities site (check the links) Also, on the latter, accounts of some folks surgical experiences. I faxed my questions to my doc (or mailed them) before I met him, and he answered almost every one without my even having to prompt him, at that first appointment, a year and a half before surgery. As for the catheter, I had one. Many people do; some do not. Ask your surgeon what he generally does. If it reassures her at all, I did not feel it one bit, even when it was removed -- it worried me a bit when my male nurse announced he was going to take it out, but he did it with aplomb and face-saving grace for us both. I was very grateful to have it in place, as the meds they give you make you go like crazy, and with it there, I didn't have to keep trying to struggle to the bathroom. Read around a bit on this site, oss2 and the geocities one, then ask whatever questions we might be helpful with, from a lay perspective. Guest guest
Hi , I had upper jaw surgery to correct an open bite. I did not have a catheter. I spent only 1 night in the hospital and took 2 and half weeks off from work to recover. I am 33 and made it through just fine. My journey is almost over as I am having my braces removed tomorrow. Both you and your daughter are welcome to email me with any questions you may have. Regards, > > Hi there, > My daughter is scheduled for upper (I hear from surgoen today) jaw > surgery the 20th of this month. > she had bad headaches, went to ortho, had splint for 1.5 years > adjusting it to get jaw to happy place, no more headaches. > > Splint gone, then braces, 1.5 yrs, headaches increasing bigtime. > > I feel I don't understand 100%. Guest guest
Hello, Catheter, yes. The surgery lasted 5 hours for me and is longer for others. Then they didn't take it out for a day. It was yuckee! I had headaches and earaches before surgery and get them all the time now. But I am sure it is because I am 5 weeks post op and am trying my hardest to chew. OS says I should get the jaw moving (or at least try) Tell your daughter not to worry. We all survive it. She is young and will bounce back a lot quicker than me (I am 43) She will be in ICU for a day depending upon how she is doing. I was having trouble breathing so I was in ICU. Good luck and write when you need to. Guest guest
FYI - not everyone goes to ICU. I for one did not and 's daughter may very well skip ICU as well. > Hello, > Catheter, yes. Guest guest
Thanks to all of you for your input. I had a hysterectomy in feb and found a great support web for that. Katy's doesn't seem to want to....she's never had any surgery so it will be hard. I've already learned from you folks. Yeah catheter makes sense...mine wasn't bad, actually nice not to have to get up to pee right off. I pray the headaches go away after the healing, its debilitating to have them often. I want to be prepared to take care of her. This postop stuff isn't my normal gig so feel I need it spelled out to me as to what to expect and how to care for her. Thanks again sooooooooooo much. > > Hello, > > Catheter, yes. The surgery lasted 5 hours for me and is longer for > others. Then they didn't take it out for a day.
