We did tomatis 3 times. I am looking into AIT or the listening program. We

found that tomatis made my daughter pay attention better, but a sensitivity to

sudden sound developed in her. I don't know anyone else that this has

happened to, so we are probably rather unique. There was a bone conductor ear

phone

that was placed on her that caused her to suddenly speak when the audiologist

turned on some switch outside the soundproof booth. I am still awed at how

it occurred. Now, though I am looking into some type of listening therapy

that would help with the sudden sound sensitivity. Carolyn

LOVED the Listening Program. No Tomatis or Berrard where I live but The

Listening Program worked very well for us.

We have done Tomatis with very good results. My two boys have severe autism and

after the first round of Tomatis, they started turning when their names were

called, much, much improved eye contact, started understanding more of what was

said to them, better balance/coordination, started responding especially when I

spoke to them by coming to me. We do not have Tomatis in our area and had to

travel. I would like to do it some more, but if the Listening Program would

work for us at home, that would definately be so much more affordable and more

convenient. We are checking into this through NACD.

TLP is now available with bone conduction stuff. I do think we messed

up with TLP once this week and made him sensitive. I think/pray that

was temporary.

We are using Vital Sounds. Is anyone familiar with that company or program.

I'm not very familiar with it. The OT assigned it to us. We're only doing

three discs, and my son has to wear the headphones. It's tough to make it

through each session.

That is exactly what we found from tomatis...that my daughter started to

turn her head when her name was called or we called out to ask her if she wanted

something, and she was in another room unable to see we were calling, but now

showing us she heard us. Also, her understanding of speech improved. We did

it out of the Center, and I have heard that they now have a program

where you can do the therapies at home. Carolyn

My son's OT had us do this as well. At first my son would only listen

for 3-5 minutes at a time but then he got up to 20 minutes twice a

day!

However it did nothing for us.

Other moms at the place I go to for therapy for my son reported

better speech, better sleep, better behavior but nothing for my son.

Again he is a non-responder.

Improvements seen as result of the Listening Program:

- better ability to discern loudness and pitch of voice (within 2 months of

use); This was a really noticeable issue. Mark used to talk 'VERY LOUDLY' at

inappropriate times. He would just about yell half of the time. In addition,

it seemed to help the quality of his voice and he truly began to 'hear himself'

for the first time. He began to develop greater self-awareness.

- stopped leaving off consonent sounds at the ends of words. This took a long,

long time probably 6 or 7 months of use. He became more interested in speaking

correctly. For years and years, Mark would say 'free' instead of 'three' even

though he could say the 'th' sound correctly. He just never realized that he

was doing it. After using the Listening Program, he began to 'hear' when he was

speaking incorrectly or poorly. He couldn't do this before. He thus began to

'self-monitor' his speech and correct his bad habits.

- more desire to challenge himself physically and engage in new sports (within a

week or two of use).

- better balance and proprioception

What do you mean " messed up " ? We've had weird behavior / bad mood for

a couple of weeks, and I think I've decided it's from TLP, not

Christmas food infractions. It has begun to dissipate...

Not to be a Pollyanna, but maybe the fact that he learned to tolerate

the headphones is a sign of some as-yet-unseen improvement.

Was it after the speech discs that you saw the speech improvements?

My son is also VERY LOUD and also says a few words strangely,

like " resterday " . I would love it if he would stop waking us all up

at 6:00am with his loud " whispers " .

One day I put the headphones on and the sound was up too loud and I

did not realize it for a bit. He has not had the WOW TLP stuff we

were having. He does talk more though since we have started over all.

We are where you are discwise. We saw the balance and physical

challenging immediately on the preview cd. has often

whispered at the therapist and TLP has given him confidence to speak

in a normal tone with, sadly, poor articulation. If he really knows a

word cold or if he is fighting with his sister the words are clearer

and very loud. When are they supposed to move from fink to think? My

daughter, 4, still says fink instead of think and free instead of

three.

What about consonants in beginning of words. Stop is top ot to right

now.

Isn't the resterday thing a remaining tongue placement thing. Think

about how much easier it is to say r than y, particularly if you have

a stiff tongue/back of throat from calcification, dairy allergy, etc.

My son's kid, who now at 13 has gut issues and was recently scoped

for celiac, used to call me Yiz instead of Liz. I think he had a

tongue thing too. He also used to talk with an accent sort of

brooklyneese. He would say " My dad's a lawya. " All these things

resolved on their own. His younger suster had awful speech issues and

both come from a family (cousin's wife) with a history of serious

genetic/gut issues...her cousin was born without a rectum. Sorry, I

spend far too much time seeing shades of this everywhere.

Liz,

Patience on the 'thr' sound. Consonent blends are often difficult to master.

Work on the 'th' sound prior to adding the 'r' blend. This was a long time ago

for me so I can't remember when these sounds are actually 'supposed' to come in.

Had I known that speech issues were going to be a 'lifetime' occupation for

me.... I would have taken notes!

We used word sheets to conquor the 'th' sound. Thumb, thousand, thistle, think,

thought, the, thimble etc then moved to the middle sounds such as father,

mother, without, within, and eventually moved to the end sounds such as with,

myth, wreath, beneath, etc. When you do word sheets (moving across syllables),

you must speak very, very slowly with the child and 'over' enounciate.

Sometimes it helps to just work with the sound ie. 'th......' holding the

position of your tongue under your teeth and trying to do this with the child

for a bit....

Once that is conquored then add the rest of the word so go 'th'.......ink

(extend the th sound and then add the ink.) Make any sense to you?

Apparently age 6 is the deadline for thr according to this. It is

strange when I look at this as some things he knows early, very

early, while other basics he struggles with. The original speech

therapist found he had many high order sounds and missed the lower

ones. I think that was an initial failure to get going

genetic/vaccine thing. In my daughter, who, once she learned a sound,

higher or lower, kept it. She was two months late talking but once

she spoke she was beyond articulate and knew it all. She did have

processing stuff and late repeating. She is now just bright,

articulate, great conversationalist and her behavior, compared to a

few months ago and in general, is phenomenal. A happy and thriving

kid. Her deal was metal and gut. Her brother has the same deal, a

more impaired gut or impaired more in a different spot, and perhaps

more mercury in a shorter timeframe due to the ear stuff.

What I meant was his ears were more sensitive. We have no behavioral

stuff. The Ear sensitivity has improved and he is happily on disc 3.

We do this 15 minutes per day at a volume no higher than 14 for 5

days on, 2 days off, for two weeks. It may help you to listen to a

section if it seens to bother him. We had that once. The 7 seconds

that bothered him on the disc were dead air. Also, the OT said we may

have to play with volume as time goes on. Not had to yet.
