Guest guest
I am scheduled for orgnathic surgery on October 7,2004. They will advance my upper 4-5 mm and level out by lower. They say I willl be banded for the first week. Can you tell me how you take perscription medication when you are banded shut? The dr. also said to use warm moist heat on my face when I return home. What have you found that is good for that? I have found the web site to be very informative. Thanks. Beverly

Guest guest
Beverly, I was banded shut for the first week as well. The only way to take meds when you can't open your mouth is liquids. so they gave me liquid forms of both my pain meds and anti-biotics. both of them tasted pretty gross. but you can mix them with stuff to try to mask the taste. as for the warm moist heat...i found ice packs to be more effective than heat. but you can also fill the icepacks with hot water instead of ice if you want heat. Guest guest
Definatly go with the ice rather than the heat at first. The ice feels much better and really helps with swelling. After the bulk of the swelling goes down then switch to the heat, although i still loved putting the ice on because it felt so good. I was banded shut too, but becuase the results were good, I wasn't totally shut. I could still open my mouth a bit to fit in a pill and a little spoon. I had liquid meds too. - > > I am scheduled for orgnathic surgery on October 7,2004. They will > > advance my upper 4-5 mm and level out by lower. They say I willl > > be banded for the first week. Guest guest
Check out the ZipNSqueeze site. I found the jaw wraps to be woonnnderful. You can also get moist heating pads, if you want them, and humidifiers, vaporizers have been majorly helpful to many. If you don't want to do any of those, a warm washcloth can also supply you moist heat, and a bag of frozen peas can give you an icy pack. (My doc wanted cold for the first 48 hours, then heat. That's why I loved the jaw wraps -- plus the idea that they would stay put and I didn't have to hold them.) If you're to be banded tightly, check out the zippie feeding bags, too. They'll probably send you home with syringes. Some folks prefer those. Some like the zippies. some can do cups (you might want to try getting a toddler's sippie cup, just in case). It all depends on what you find works best for you, and what your doc recommends. Probably your meds will be liquid, or if you take tablets or capsules that can't be dissolved, talk with your surgeon. It's a good idea, anyhow, to let your surgeon (and your anaesthesiologist) know what you're taking, so they can make provisions for your needs.
