Guest guest
Hello , My name is I will be having surgery in the next month or so . My ortho and my surgeon are still working on the details. I will be having upper and lower jaws done and a sliding geneoplasty. I am totally scared I'm not sure what to expect. How much pain I will be in and how in the heck do you throw up with your mouth wired shut? Everyone asks if I'm crazy for doing this. Has anyone had luck with your insurance paying for this? I'll keep in touch. __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Hi ! I am wired shut right now (2 days til I get unwired but who's counting?) after having upper/lower/cheek reconstruction on 9/20. I have had the great fortune of not having to throw up at all, but I was told that if you do, well---just let it happen. I have never heard of gushers (since there will hardly be anything in your stomach TO throw up). A few folks have had to throw up blood, but I didn't since I made sure I did't eat/drink anything 34 hours before surgery, and made sure the docs put that tube in my nose that keeps the stomach empty. As for pain, I guess it depends on your pain threshold and what/how many pain meds you are on. As for insurance, I posted earlier this week that I had no problems with Aetna though it took a few months and lots of proof for approval. Good Luck! Guest guest
Hi -- I had upper/lower/genio earlier this month, and can totally relate to what you are going through. To be honest, I didn't experience much pain at all, as I was very numb (and still am in some spots, but see improvements every day). The worst part was being so tired all the time, from lack of calories. Because I was so numb and couldn't open my mouth ver far, it was difficult to eat. Most people on this site get the zip and squeeze bags, I didn't, but think it would have made life much easier. Are you sure your mouth will be wired shut? Up until one of my last pre op visits to my O.S., I thought I would at least be banded shut. When I asked him how long until I was unbanded, he looked at me like I was crazy and told me he hasn't banded or wired anyone in 10 years, so you might not need to worry about that. I had Aetna insurance and they covered the upper and lower, but not the genio. The surgeon had to send in all types of x-rays and models to prove that it was necessary, but I had no problems getting covered...it just took time. Good luck with everything, rebecca goble wrote: Hello , My name is I will be having surgery in the next month or so . My ortho and my surgeon are still working on the details.
