Guest guest
I have been in braces now for 12 months preparing for the surgery and have not yet met with the surgeon (except of course before braces started). I went to my regular dentist yesterday and he said I would have two more years before I would be in a retainer. He's obviously not an orthodontist but when I started I was told 18 months until the end (retainers) and it seems like it might be more. I still need to finish the pre orthodontics (which seem almost done to me but not to the ortho apparently)get surgery and then a tooth implant. Is there anyone else in the same position as me and how long did it take and what happened first (implant or surgery)? Do you get the implant tooth after braces or during? I think I need to ask all these questions to my orthodontist but until then does anyone know? I so much want this to end I can not stand being in braces and really need a break. Guest guest
, I can tell you what I know. When I got my braces on my od said two years. Then I wanted to do the surgery so more prep time to flare out my upper teeth for surgery. Was suppose to be out of braces Nov5, 2004. I had my surgery Oct 12, 2004 and will be an braces another three to six months. The implant will probaly be done after surgery and braces. My friends daughter was missing a bicuspid and had upper and lower surgery. The od left an opening to have the implant placed and that was her last step. I also might need an implant. One week before surgery. I had to have a bone graft done to save my canine tooth and won't know if took for another four months. So, for me it's been a little over two years, but for me has flown by. I was a little disappointed not getting my braces off sooner. In the end though it will be all worth the wait when I finally have a perfect smile. > > I have been in braces now for 12 months preparing for the surgery > and have not yet met with the surgeon (except of course before > braces started). Guest guest
Ummm -- sure, you can stand being in braces. You are, and there are many worse places to be. But to answer your question more directly: It depends on what needs doing in your mouth, and how your teeth are moving. The one fixed value is that you need to be ready before the surgeon starts making his cuts. Before, in fact, the anesthesiologist starts putting you under. I was in the appliances 16 months before surgery, and four after. I had a crossbite, an overjet and an underbite. My guy fixed all that, and tended to levelling and aligning in that 16 months, and then the surgeon mended the underlying stuff. I think the implants come after, but don't know. Ask your specialists... And hey -- if you can manage to pay for ortho, and pay for surgery or get your insurance company to do so, you have your break! Not meaning to be unsympathetic... Nobody would do this for kicks. At least nobody sane that I know. But it can help solve troubles, as I hope it does for you... Guest guest
Thanks for replying guys. I actually have no idea if my insurance will pay for it. If they won't I will still do it. I have called the hospital that the surgery will be performed at and I can afford there fees. Everyone else has been budgeted for over the last year so its ok. I am glad to hear that thinks her braces will be off no more than 6 months after surgery and then the implant done. Thats what I have heard before but I dont know how you put retainers together with a missing tooth in mind. It perplexes me. I find orthos are very keen to get you in and out of their premises avery month - just 10 minutes generally and then goodbye...Never any conversations of note. Which is what I really need. The more information the better but if thats not how they operate it makes it tuff. The person I really want to speak with is the surgeon as I have met him before and I think he is one of the worlds best which gives me huge confidence and he has good verbal communication skills which is important in keeping patients happy. I know there are a lot of worse places to be than this and worse things that can happen to you but I think it is also relative to the people you know and deal with generally rather than those you don't as it is like different levels of life if you know what I mean. One thing I am noticing is how many adults are wearing braces nowadays. Personally I would never have done this as an adult if I did not really need more structual help! > > > > I have been in braces now for 12 months preparing for the surgery > > and have not yet met with the surgeon (except of course before > > braces started). Guest guest
More power to you, ! Glad to hear from someone so self- sufficient out there... Have you tried making an appointment strictly for conversation/consultation with either the ortho or the surgeon? Perhaps that might help. I asked for one with the ortho when I realized that I did not know the treatment plan. I didn't get it -- but he did take lots of time to talk with me at my next adjustment appointment, and it accomplished the same thing. But hey -- if that is what you feel you need, call either one and insist. You may well have to pay, but that does not seem a problem for you. Hey -- I wouldn't have undertaken braces, much less surgery, if I hadn't been threatened with losing my teeth! Not, of course, that I fault anyone with different ideas... Good wishes. > > > > > > I have been in braces now for 12 months preparing for the > surgery > > > and have not yet met with the surgeon (except of course before > > > braces started).
