Guest guest
Hi need to offload some emotions as not getting much support from my family on this one. My surgery is in about two months and keep having lots of irrational thoughts about MRSA infections and have major complications. Is this normal?! Thanks for listening Greg

Guest guest
Sorry your family is not being helpful. Sometimes that happens -- family can be frightened, jealous, guilty-feeling ... all sorts of things. And some people just don't like the idea of any change, apparently. But that doesn't help you at all. On the other side of the picture -- we're here! Vent any time, ask any questions. I don't think I know what an MRSA infection is. Most people do not have major complications. Most people do not have infections -- although it is indeed important to take the ton of anti- biotics that will be prescribed for you -- no matter how yucky they taste! It's not unusual to have odd thoughts in anticipation of the surgery - - nor odd dreams, for that matter. (I won't tell you what, lest I stick some ideas in your head.) It's scary stuff, and it's definitely on your mind as the day draws near. Take care. Try to be calm. -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " bcm_lon " <bcm_lon@y...> wrote: > Hi > > need to offload some emotions as not getting much support from my > family on this one. > > My surgery is in about two months and keep having lots of irrational > thoughts about MRSA infections and have major complications. Guest guest
I did a google search on MRSA infection, and found out that it's an infection that can happen in open wounds. This surgery is typically done all inside the mouth. You'll be given prescription mouthwash and told to keep your mouth very clean, even if you're wired shut (which I wasn't). My surgeon did say the risk of infection was key, and that's what he was monitoring during my recovery. I had prescriptions for antibiotics, and I took them exactly as prescribed, for the full length required. I had no problems. It's not too late to decide not to have this surgery, but if you do decide to go ahead, you have to give all of your faith to your surgical team. Yes, many things can happen with small percentage of likelihood, but most do not. Talk about it with your surgeon, your ortho and your general practitioner. I'm sure you'll find out that most of their patients who have had these procedures have done just fine (I was surprised to find that a few of my regular doc's patients had had this procedure, she said they hardly mentioned it to her). I'm one who got pretty freaked out about 8 weeks pre-op by a comment made to me by someone who shouldn't have, I checked with my ortho, my general physician and my surgeon to make sure this wasn't an unnecessary procedure, and they all assured me it wasn't. But the decision was mine, I could have backed out at any time. I didn't, and I had a really easy recovery. I found a calm zone about a week before surgery (I did a lot of things to get there - if you're interested, you can read my surgery experience on this site under Personal Surgery Experiences at http://www.geocities.com/orthognathicinfo/ ) > > Hi > > > > need to offload some emotions as not getting much support from my > > family on this one. > > > > My surgery is in about two months and keep having lots of > irrational > > thoughts about MRSA infections and have major complications. Guest guest
Thanks for your help again guys - I long await the calm zone! Hopefully I will get one as I'm definitely going to go ahead with the operation. For your own interest, MRSA is the normal bacteria that lives in mouth, nose etc that has mutated to become resistant to almost all antibiotics – if it gets into metalwork it can be very dangerous. It's often termed the hospital superbug but they're finding it everywhere now e.g Fast Food Restaurants etc. It's widely documented here in the UK as our media are very aggressive. It's just as prevalent in the US but seems to be kept a lot more under wraps. I have real concern because as a Physiotherapist I have exposure to it every day. I literally scrub down after seeing each patient to ensure I don't get infected. OK guys - keep up the good work - you are great. I'll probably message again in about 4 weeks with more hysteria!
