Guest guest
Well, I have been home from my lower jaw advancement since about 2:00 this afternoon. I will start with yesterday. I was called by the hospital and told to be there at 7:30. Once I got there I went to patient registration, signed some consent froms, verified some info, and got my wristband. I was then directed to surgical services. This was another waiting room. I sat there for a short period of time, was weighed and then was sent to a large like pre- surgical holding room. I changed into my gown and these little sockies here and then my IV was inserted. My hand was numbed with novacaine before the iv was placed, but it still hurt. I'm so not a needle person. My husband was allowed to come back with me at this point and it was around 8:00. I was NOT given anything to calm my nerves at this point (it would have definately been nice) because my surgeon was not there. He would not arrive for two hours! He did however call at about 9:30 and an antibiotic was started through my iv. I also met with the anethethiologist who asked me some questions, was very very nice, and explained that he wanted to give me valium, but couldn't untill my doctor was around. Around 10:00, I was told that my surgeon was waiting for me in the OR. My husband was sent to the waiting room and I was wheeled back, still not on anything! I got back to the OR saw my surgeon, said hello, was moved over to the operating Table, and finally given something, after that, I have absolutely no memory untill 4:30 in the evening. My husband tells me my surgery was 4 hours, which is 1 hour longer than it was supposed to be, and that he meet my surgeon, who my husband deemed " a very nice guy " and that everything went fine. I did not wake up in the recovery room, but rather in my room where i would stay for the evening. Silly me, I was very anxious to put on some clothes. I did not realize that as soon as I sat up I would spew a ton of blood from my mouth. I was very fortunate that the blood taste and sight do not get me sick, because it went flying everywhere and I swallowed quite a bit. After that, I was given some morphine and fell back to sleep. My surgeon had only authorized a small amount of morphine every 4 hours and he was not due to see me untill his way home from work. I was supposed to have a liquid something in between. I could not swallow this though. My surgeon did not show up at the hospital untill around 8:30 at night. But he was very kind then in that he order them to " dope me up " and also authorized something for sleep and authorized me to be discharged at noon and to go straight to his office after that so my rubberbands could be loosen and I would be able to take pills, as the liquid meds were going nowhere. Today I woke up at the hospital after a night of off and on sleeping, never took the sleep stuff, just the mophrine which put me out for a hour at time (I think it was given every 2). I had some ginger ale at the hospital, both yesterday and this morning, but nothing to eat. At around 12 it was time for me to go. It was around here that I started having more problems. My nose was stuffy and my throat was sore for the breathing tube that I had. I was also tightly banded so I could not open my mouth. I did not have any problems breathing up until here. I also was starting to cry, from seeing myself, and I'm quite the sobber, so I was having a hard time breathing, but just wanted to get to my surgeon's office as I find him quite comforting, and knew he was the only one who could really do anything about it. So I got to my surgeon's office around 12:30. I had an X-ray done, which was not fun because at this point I was really feeling like I was not going to be able to breathe and I was going to start crying, but I made it through it and then got to see my surgeon. He immediatley cut my rubberbands and applied much looser ones. Said the crying was from the steriods. I calmed down a bit here. After my mini-crisis was over, he showed me my X-ray. I have two plates with screws kinda in them. They are different than what I expected. He called then " Plate systems " . My jaw was moved forward 7 mm and it fits excellently. My OD did a good job with the prep, so I didn't require a splint. I scheduled an apointment for the 3rd (was supposed to have one this Fri, but was really only for the X- ray which he took today). I then came home (around 2 by the time all was said and done), took some of pain medication, and hung out and watched tv with my hubby. He is napping now (watching over me is tiring work). Being me is tiring work too, so I'm off to lay around! I may post some pictures tomorrow, but it's not a pretty sight. I am huge, but maybe for learning sakes. Okay, I'll be around later I'm sure!
