Guest guest
I beg to differ, . . . depending on the type of rice, and how much it is cooked *it can & does swell*. I can only assume that you don't have a lot of experience with short grain and sticky rices. Rice is best served al dente, as is pasta. Unfortunately, both of these will *swell*, if eaten al dente. Sushi rice is particularly bothersome, as it is served al dente, and is short grained . . . Basmati rice is better, well cooked. Next are the other longer grained rices, also well cooked. Also, be aware that many starches can be stuffed down in large amounts with no painful consequences, other than slowed weight loss, or gain. YMMV. I eat protein first, because (in part) it temporarily blocks stoma, producing an earlier feeling of full. I can eat carbs all day and not feel full, as the carbs are soft enough to go thru the pouch without stopping. This is why they were included in your soft foods plan. You are, of course, always welcome to prove me wrong . . . eat some dense protein, then eat rice that *hasn't* been cooked to death. Rice that is firm to bite, not crunchy, just chewy. DOn't call an ambulance when you feel like you're having a heart attack. Just go walk around outside, and wait for 15-20 min. Or throw up. It helps if, when you start getting foamy, you spit out the foam, instead of swallowing. Swallowing saliva makes the problem worse. From: bosarge3@... Subject: Re: first dumping episode Rice does not expand in your stomach unless it is raw. That is why the birds die is because the raw rice absorbs moisture and then it swells up, but what we eat is cooked and therefore it does not swell when eaten. Rice was included in my soft food stage. A. B. LAP RNY 3/22/03 Hawkridge in Washington State.
