Guest guest
Hi Sadie I can tell you what little I know so far. I had my upper expanded, my lower moved forward and a genioplasty (which is a chin implant). This is my second round with braces and I had them on for one year before surgery. Surgery was December 8 and I spent one night in the hospital. The surgery went perfect according to the oral surgeon. No complications other than when I was waking up, I was rubbing my eyes and scratched my cornea. (i was a little out of it.) So now, I'm one week and a day post op. I still have numbness on part of my upper lip, all of my lower lip, my tongue, my palate and my chin. I also have some bruising which is already at the yellow stage (meaning it is almost gone). Bruises are on both cheeks, chin and now going down my neck. They don't really hurt but look pretty bad. I also still have a small (about an inch) purple bruise on my chin. I am only banded shut, not wired with no splint. The bands stay on 24 hours a day according to the OS. I go back next Thursday for another follow up. My lips and under my jaw are the biggest swelling now (other parts were swollen, but have resided some). I was supposed to sleep elevated but find that horrible. So I sleep on my side (either) and deal with congestion. Oh, that's another lovely part of surgery I guess. You are pretty congested afterwards and although I have been able to breath out both nose and mouth, both are pretty labored. I have had several (a few a day) nose bleeds since surgery, but the OS said that was normal. I am also coughing up a little blood. I think that must be due to the drainage from my sinuses. That only happened for the first four or five days. My throat is pretty sore from the breathing tube that I had during surgery, so that makes swallowing a little difficult. Liquids only still, but I really don't have much of an appetite anyways. Now, that's all the yucky. The good stuff I can say is my profile is already 100% better and I know when everything is said and done I will be so glad I had the surgery. Even in my swollen, numb, hungry, bruised and tired shape, I am so glad I had it! I hope this helps! Don't be scared. There has been nothing unbearable so far. If you have any other questions, let me know. Take care! Casey
