, my understanding of the " wired " business is not the same as

yours.

Some surgeons indeed do still wire, meaning lacing the jaws together,

using the surgical hooks and wires, their patients. (The elastics

folks, on the other hand, are " banded. " And some are tightly banded,

and some loosely.)

From what I've heard it's a matter of the surgeon's preference, what

happens in the OR and which procedure is being used. There's one

procedure called a vertical osteotomy (I think) for advancement of

the lower, which requires wiring for reasons I don't know. Some

surgeons believe it causes less numbness than the BSSO.

I was neither wired nor banded, and recommend that highly, if your

surgeon thinks it appropriate.
