Hello,

Here is a message from home. I will be 63 next week, and I recently

retired. But, back in the '60's, I was a young (engineering duty

only) officer in the Naval Reserve. In my senior year of high school

(Brookline, MA), my father took me aside said this to me: " As a Jew,

you owe a debt to your country, because this is one of the very few

places in the world that you can live and not fear persecution. You

should pay your debt by serving in the armed forces. That having

been decided, I want you to do it in the Navy, because that way you

will always have a clean bed and three warm meals a day. " What he

never told me, but what I learned later on, was that he tried to

enlist in the Navy in WW I, but he was too young, and he wound up in

the brig until Granddad came to get him out. Dad was asked by the

authorities if he knew Granddad, and his answer was, " I never saw him

before in my life. " That was how much my dad loved the Navy--he

never got to serve, but in WW II, he was a welder in the shipyard,

helping to build carriers, destroyers, etc. So, I wanted you to know

that an old Navy man really appreciates your service to our beloved

country and wishes you calm seas and a following wind.
