Guest guest
Hi , You have articulated a lot of the feelings I'm having as well. I'm also doing this for structural reasons to save my teeth, but I can't help wondering what the cosmetic implications will be. I'm excited to finally rid myself of the underbite and, potentially, my long face, but what if I don't like the changes? I'm imagining being really depressed about it and my friends saying, " Well, this is what you get for having cosmetic surgery. " I try to reason with friends and colleagues that it's not cosmetic but, I think because it's the face, they all assume I'm having plastic surgery! I think all we can do is continue to educate ourselves. Ask your surgeon for photographs of patients who had a similar bite as you who had genio. Also ask them about your recovery and depression. Do they think you'll be o.k. without much help at home? It's so hard to gauge -- some people have a very easy recovery with this and others really seem to struggle. I'm trying to get myself as healthy as possible beforehand: exercising, taking supplements, and doing some yoga/meditation. I work at a university that offers Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and I'm going to try to fit in at least an intro. class. Something like this could likely help with depression and with the stress you're feeling about being away from work. It isn't at all pathetic to want our Moms during all this, no matter what our age. I lost my Dad in 2001 and miss him terribly right now. My Mom was supposed to come in December for the holidays and my post- surgery, but she has been very sick for the last month, and may not be able to take additional time off work. Let me tell you, this 36- year old was balling at the idea of her not being here. I am lucky to have a live-in boyfriend who works from home to take care of me, so I shouldn't complain. I'm wishing you all the best. Maddie > > > > > > I am scheduled to have upper/lower surgery in NYC on Dec 7 after > a > > > year of ortho.
