Guest guest
, I too had an open Roux-en-Y and the anesthesiologist was unable to connect an epidural. When I came out of surgery I tried the morphine pump, and usually I can take morphine pills, but for some reason the drip gave me very extreme headaches that were, for me, worse than the surgical pain. I had to do without pain medication for the next 4 days, as I refused the morphine drip and was allergic to other pain medications. The last day in the hospital (day 5) the head pharmacist visited me with new information about a new long acting form of morphine (I had trauma years ago and usually took 3 pills everyday at home for extreme pain that I have in my back, neck & knees). He said the doctor would give me a dose to see how I did, and it worked great. The medication was named Avinza, 30 mg., and it comes in capsule form...right after surgery I took the capsules apart and sprinkled the " tiny pearl like " contents into a spoonfull of applesause and swallowed it. This worked great and they hold you in less pain for 12 hours, so you only need to take one capsule, twice a day. Talk to the doctor about Avinza, it just might save you days of pain and silent suffering.
