Guest guest
Because of my issues after upper and lower surgery over a year ago, I recently went to another orthognathic surgeon for his opinion. He took measurments and listened to my complaints then told me he would have done the exact same surgery as the other doc except he would not have moved my upper jaw so far up. When I smile in a normal way, my lip only goes up to expose a little more than half my upper teeth. Before it was gummy and has now went to no gums. I think this is why my nose got bent so much as well. Anyway this doc said he would be glad to redo my surgery by lowering my upper by 3 to 4 mm and shifting my lower jaw over so the asymetry on the one side is not as strong. This doc said he does about 150 jaw surgeries per year and that he and my other doc do the majority of these in the Atlanta area. Then, a week later, I went for my yearly follow-up to my original surgeon. I asked him why I don't show enough teeth now and he explained it was because that my lips are slightly crooked and that I should have a 'Lip sling surgery " to move up one side so it would expose more teeth. (I have tried this in the mirror and with it my lips still don't go above my teeth to show gum unless I really exaggerate my smile) He explained he would correct my asymetry by trimming the longer jaw. Functionally, my bite is very good, although it seems like there is more pressure/pain when I bite is completely closed making me wonder if moving it up has put more presure on my jaw joint. Are there many on this site who have had a second jaw surgery? I am very frustrated that this surgery has given me a wonderful bite, but no one can see much of the result when I smile. I am also confused how they could trim things during the original surgery and this doc could lower everything again. He made it sound like it was not a big deal, but it was too technical for me to understand. Any opinions/advice would be appreciated. Thanks Mark
