Guest guest
I just wanted to share my story because even though I didn't post on this board it really helped reading all the stories. I am a 25 year old who had upper, lower, and genio. I was really freaked out in the weeks before the surgery. All the basic worries like, am I gonna lose weight, how will i eat, what if it goes wrong etc. The night before the surgery i realized that I was going through with it no matter what and I just had to put my faith in the dr that he would do a good job. There was no point in worrying about all of it and if i had problems I would deal with them as they came. Thinking all that, i was happy as could be going into surgery and happy after. I think taking a positive attitude towards it all and not worrying really helped in my recovery. I kept ice on my face at all times and that really helped my swelling go down fast. I still have a lot of swelling but I look so much better, I could care less at this point. It will go down soon enough. My bite is right on now. I've never felt my back teeth touch before. The headaches and back aches i had before are virtually gone. I can breath better. It was all so worth it! The things that were hard to deal with: The pain from the tube they put in your throat to help you breath during surgery. That hurt more than the surgery. I couldn't drink because it hurt so bad. I went back to the dr and they put me on an iv for a while- I felt a million times better. Being starving all the time. I was so hungry. I ate a lot of ice cream with hot fudge which helped me maintain my weight- at a whopping 100lbs. I also ate a lot of cream of wheat which helped fill me up. I could really go the rest of my life without seeing another bowl of ice cream or a bowl of soup again, but pasta never looked so good! The splint. I was so excited to get that thing out of my mouth. What I wasn't prepared for was how disgusting the roof of my mouth was gonna feel. Imagine having a band-aid on a finger for three weeks. Well thats what my mouth felt like. yuck. The drugs i was on during recovery. They made me feel very disconnected from the world. I felt like i didn't really care about anything. Just remeber if you are feeling depressed and wondering why you went through with all this- it's pry the drugs talking. Just relax and throw on a movie- or in my case watch every single episode of Buffy the Vampire slayer (that really helped). I would be happy to answer any ones concerns with going through the surgery. I'm not all that far out, so I can't answer any long term questions, but feel free to ask. I will also send pictures to anyone interested. Good luck to anyone about to go through with this and thank you to everyone who shared their stories- It really helped!
