Guest guest
Hi, I had top and bottom jaw surgery 10/26. My Dr.'s recommended Children's Dimetapp Elixar for Colds and Allergy for keeping the nasal passages breathing-- I also purchased a humidifier and used the nasal spray (Afrin) prescribed by the surgeons. My top jaw was High Lefort and they went into my nasal cavity and split my palate as well. While in the hospital, the humidified oxygen helped a great deal. At home, I keep the humidifier going constantly. Only had a bit of stuffiness a few times and once I took the Dimetapp -- I was breathing with no difficulty. No sore throat. And I talked. And Talked. AND TALKED! Kaiser surgeons in Oakland CA recommend you talked, even wired asap. The more you talk, the more you move your lips and mouth, the quicker the swelling goes down. I saw my ortho on Wed and he was so amazed, my bruising is gone and he worried because of my health issues (autoimmune chronic illnesses) that I was a high risk patient. He has different Dr.'s that he works with -- told me that I was so lucky to have Dr.'s Poor and Dr. Wong in Oakland... he said they did in 3 hours what any other surgeon would have taken 6 hours to do. I also was scheduled for nasal and cheek implants and genioplasty on my chin. Once the Dr.'s saw the results of the jaw movement, the operating room staff all agreed I didn't need the " extras " . I will have liposuction on my chin and neck in a few months. I am back to work. I took care of my 17 month old grandson all day today as well as took care of our online sheepskin boot business. I won't lie and say there weren't some tense moments, but I survived. I see my surgeon this week. I was unwired at day 6. Banded only now. Of course I'm still on a really soft diet and liquid still... but one day at a time. Thank you to this group again for all the messages and support. I'm lucky so far that my Lupus has stayed in check. I am blessed to have such a great support group around me as well. Happy Holidays to you all. As for Thanksgiving -- if I can't eat turkey... I'll puree it and drink it with turkey gravy <big grin> Connie Re: New here, need help with questions As with most things involved in these procedures, the answers vary a lot from person to person. Some people who have had a lot of work on the upper jaw have congestion for a week or so post op. Breathing can feel difficult for them -- and if they have nose procedures and have their noses packed, then the air has to come in through the mouth. While people who are wired shut can get claustrophobic about it, I've never heard of anybody even fainting, much less being damaged by not getting enough air in . Some folks wake up and find that for the first time in their lives they can breathe through their noses, and smell things they've never smelled before. I did not feel pain from yawning or sneezing, but I didn't have upper jaw surgery. I did have a really sore throat for a week or so, as a result of the intubation. How long will you be wired shut, vis a vis the syringe? And you might want to have a look at the ZipnSqueeze bags, too. As well as the jaw wrap. Ask your surgeon about the waxing, but I can't imagine that such would be a good idea. Your surgeon will need to make cuts -- and maybe even cut the archwires -- and I wouldn't think he'd or she'd want wax in there getting in the way.
