, you might be interested in this article, A Dermatologic View

of the Permeability Barrier, by Feingold, MD, from the Feb

1992 issue of Cosmetics and Toiletries. From my limited knowledge

base it looks like a good article, and makes an interesting

observation that occlusive topicals that do not allow water to escape

seem to discourage repair of the protective barrier:

I don't know but, if petroleum is occlusive, then the underlying

barrier might not be naturally repaired and so may encourage long

term skin dryness.
