Lou,

My dad is a priority one vet and former p.o.w. category. He did not qualify

for a motorized chair because he has use of his arms. That is what his doctor

at the VA said when we requested a chair for him. They have given him

everything, including a superpole, manual chair, walkers, bathchairs, etc. I

am not giving up yet though. I am glad that you got your chair and hope

everything goes better with the driving! I will bet he will learn really

quickly.

Janet,

When we tried to get a motorized chair for my dad from the VA we didn't

have much luck. At the Phoenix V A we were told that the prescription for the

chair must come from the doctor. She said that he did not qualify because he

had use of his arms (though he is unable to control the manual chair for more

than a few minutes).

If you are interested in getting some other equipment that he needs you

can ask that an occupational therapist come to your home. We have also called

the " prosthetic " department and talked to them about what we needed. There

were bathroom bars, suitcase ramps, walkers, manual chairs, superpole and

many other useful items. They were conveniently delivered to my parents home.

Good luck.

There is a booklet that may answer some of your questions on the VA

available at the VAS World Wide Web Home page at: http://www.va.gov/
