: colds and MSA

Hi Jerry:

When Fred gets a cold, I get Tussin over the counter. You can find it at

Savon's or Wal-Mart. It seems to work for Fred and that's what the doctor

told us that he could use. One thing I do when Fred get's a cold is take him

in to the doctor to make sure it's not in his lungs. Rather be safe then

sorry. He does feel weak with a cold, so your brother's weakness could be

from that.

My brother has just acquired a cold and he apparently took some

over-the-counter (I think Dimatap or something like that) cold meds to

treat his symptoms - runny nose, etc. Unfortunately, he woke up the

next morning unable to use his legs, unable to cath, and generally very

weak. Our family doctor was consulted and he, of course, suspected the

cold medicine as the culprit and advised him not to take any more.

Questions:

1) has anyone else experienced similar effects from cold meds?

2) what meds have others found that help to alleviate cold symptoms

without causing such adverse

reactions for MSA patients?

3) do colds themselves have an overall weakening effect on MSA patients?

I know we've discussed many

times on the list that UTI's cause a signficiant weakening.
