Bischel, was born December 31, 1933 in Bismarck, N. Dakota,

spending most of his youth there. He died Saturday, November 16, 2002,

after a lengthy challenge with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA).

served in the U.S. Army as a laboratory technician in Japan, then

settling in Oregon. In 1962 he graduated from the Univ. of Ore. Medical

School. That was followed by a 1 yr. Internship at Emanuel Hospital in

Portland, a 3 yr. residency in psychiatry at Oregon State Hospital in

Salem, and a 2 yr. residency in child psychiatry at Hawthorne Center in

Northville, Michigan.

Dr. Bischel worked 10 yrs. for Multnomah County Mental Health, and then 18

yrs. for Clackamas County Mental Health reluctantly retiring from

practice in 1996 due to his physical challenges. He very much loved his

work and his patients.

was director of the Oregon State Hospital child psychiatry training

for the resident physicians from 1969 - 1989. He developed the program and

supervised the residents in their rotations in child psychiatry. He was

also an OHSU Assistant Clinical Professor, on the volunteer faculty, 1968 -

1989.

is remembered by family, friends and co-workers as having the ability

to put life's 'everyday challenges' into a perspective that we all

understood & could use as a growth opportunity in our lives. He was often

sought out for advise, or 'just to chat'.

He's also been very much admired for his temperament - especially during

the past few years when he has been so physically challenged. Few people

could meet the challenges that he's had in the past few years with the

grace & acceptance that he's shown. has always met life's challenges

- be it health, job, family, whatever - as an opportunity for spiritual

growth.

'Complain' has not been a word in his vocabulary. Rather, he thanked God

for the opportunity to grow in this life. He's one of God's most gentle of

souls; and he's certainly set a great example for all of us to follow.

is survived by his wife of 38 yrs., Charmayne Bandfield Bischel, son

Brad Bischel, son Brett Bischel (along with daughter-in-law lise and

grandchildren Marisa & ), daughter Beth Bischel Stoner (along with

son-in-law Dan Stoner and grandchildren Jacee, & Jaedon), all of

Oregon. Three brothers also survive him: Ken Justice of Colorado, Leonard

Bischel, Jr. of Arizona & Dan Bischel of Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Bischel, Sr. & Darleen

Hydeman Bischel; as well as by his brother, Bischel, & a sister,

Jane Justice.

At his request, there will be no service.
