Homemade GEL and MOUSSE :)

Hi gang - it's me - the homemade makeup gal!! Still using my most

recent version - the powder mixed with toleraine lotion and all is

well.

Now for the hair. I had given up using hair products like mousse and

gel since they always ended up irritating my skin due to hair on the

face or getting on the skin from my hands. Even the all natural ones

irritate - chamomile is the worst! I have taken the time to find

some recipes for mousse and gel :) It turns out simple gelatin is

the key. I am pretty sure gelatin should not harm the skin if it

happens to come in contact with it. I'm going to try the gel tonight

since it's so easy to make. You can also use flax seeds to make gel -

I found that very interesting. -Patty

Gel:

1/2 to 1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin, 1 cup warm water

Directions: Dissolve gelatin in 1 cup warm water. Keep refrigerated

and use as you would a purchased gel.

Another Gel:

2 Tbsp flax

seed

1 1/4 Cups water

Few drops essential oil (optional)

Put seeds & water in saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat

and let sit covered for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain through hand held

sieve and allow to cool completely. Add essential oils when cool.

Put in glass container to store. Makes about 3/4 cup. Just put on

hair as you would store bought gel. It would not seem as if this

would work, but it does and will not leave the hair heavy or built up.

Mousse:

Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon plain gelatin in 1 cup boiling water. Let sit

at room temperature until slightly set. Rub into dry or wet hair, and

blow dry.

<<The only question is if

homemade hair gel will harm the hair in the long run. It does not

seem like it would hurt it. Not sure if the gelatin gel irritates

the face or not (from getting on the face due to fingers or hair with

gel residue on them). So far no problem but I just started using it

on my hair this morning. I dont think gelatin is acidic, is it?

Patty>>

hey patty,

hey all.

i can answer this question as a

makeup artist.

plain gelatin

we use for special effects and for prosthetics

we can even put it on babies

it shouldn't make any skin react.

the only problem is:

the plain gelatin

kinda smells like wet dog when you're making it ...

(but maybe only in the concentrations we use for spfx)

so i'm sure it'll be fine for your hair.

does it wash out as easily as regular gel?

take care,

stacey

How funny! Gelatin works pretty much exactly like storebought gel.

I could not believe it. It turns slightly stiff, yet pliable, just

like gel. My hair looks exactly the same as if I used the expensive

gel I had been using. I made a full cup of " gelatin gel " for

pennies and it took only a minute or two. The only question is if

homemade hair gel will harm the hair in the long run. It does not

seem like it would hurt it. Not sure if the gelatin gel irritates

the face or not (from getting on the face due to fingers or hair with

Thanks Stacey! That is encouraging. When I washed my hair this

morning the gelatin gel washed out easily - similar to regular gel.

I used it again today. Very happy with it. I'll let you all know if

it does anything bad to the hair long-term. The recipe was in

several places on the web so it seems other people have used it and I

did not see any problems reported.

Now if I'm at a party and need a quick hairdo fix I can just dip my

head in the jello. ha ha!!
