Someone helped me () find a way to get the Form 990 Report on

the NRS and a copy of the is available online.

In 2000 the NRS received about $954,000 of which over $12,000 was

interest and spent over a million bucks for 'grants, program services,

management and fund raising.' By the way, the total expenditure on

grants was only a little over $94,000 which is less than 10% of the

expenditures. At the end of 2000 the net assets of the NRS was $537,497.

The NRS spent $18,038 for online services, $155,046 for 'program

services expenses' (with regard to the $94,564 grants given out),

$75,219 for the physician referral service, $42,819 for a 'rosacea

hotline,' $174,422 for the cea Review Newsletter, $386,429 for

Awareness and Education, and $148,772 for 'Fulfillment Services.'

This totals over a million bucks.

The NRS has three listed names, B Huff, President, Dathy J Olney,

Treasurer, and A Earhard, Secretary. It is of note that the only

listed expenditure for " Part II - Compensation of the Five Highest Paid

Independent Contractors for Professional Services "

was paid to Sam Huff & Associates, Inc. of Barrington, IL, for 'Public

Relations' in the amount of $744,075.

You have to be a certified public accountant or maybe one of Arthur

's men to figure out some of this, but it sure looks like

if you donate to the NRS you can see where your money is going by

reading FORM 990 which is public knowledge available for free.

Maybe there should be another organization for rosacea with a better

expenditure approach?

You can get all this information in a pdf at this url >

http://www.guidestar.org

type in the box 'National cea Society'

and search for the FORM 990 pdf for 2000 and you have your own copy.

Hi Brady,

Wow, you really uncovered some good stuff. I wonder how many of those

contributor dollars are from Galderma? I noticed on the Form 990 that

they list an individual contributor giving over $700,000 to the NRS.

The site blocked out the name of the contributor. I did happen to go

the Galderma site and noticed that Galderma is a joint venture

between LOreal and Nestle. It's not a little company on it's own.

Here's the link if anyone is interested:

http://www.galderma.com/about_galderma/about.php

I'll see if I can dig up the Galderma annual statement somewhere.

Take care,

Matija

Hi- I actually have their 2001 Form 990 - I requested

it months ago, when the threads were about donating to

the NRS, and I was curious. Their income has dropped

in 2001. They received revenue of $202,637 in year

2001. Their expenses totaled $451,894. They spent

$403,212 on program services, $27,308 on management

and general, and $21,374 on fundraising.

Program Services includes: $97,180 on public

awareness which includes a toll free number and

website; $142,269 on patient education which includes

cea Review newsletter; $81,423 on Medical

Scientific Education - which includes committees to

develop standardized criteria, an annual rosacea

workshop, and technical exhibits at major medical

meetings; and $82,340 on Research grants program--and

$72,230 on actual grants to drs. for research.

Research grants were given to: Dr. M. Yaar at Boston

University; Dr. Lerner at Mass. General Hospital; Dr.

Kavanagh at Nat'l. Univ. Ireland, Kildare, Ireland;

Dr. Fitzpatric at Univ. Coll. Dublin, Ireland; Dr.

Thiboutot at Penn. State Univ., Dr. Gallo at Veterans

Med. Research in San Diego. (Maybe someone out there

knows these doctors and could find out more about

their research projects.)

No directors or key employees were paid over $50,000.

The President is Huff, the Treasurer is Datha

Olney; and Erhard is the Secretary. However,

$288,626 was paid to Glendale Communications Group in

Barrington IL (listed as a contractor). (I wonder if

Sam Huff and Associates changed their name??)

I'm not an accountant, but before I would give any

dollars to them, I'd want to know more about what the

research grants cover, and why the change in income

from year 2000 to 2001. Just an FYI in 1997 their

gifts (contributions) received were $284,353, then in

1998, it jumped to $1,078,778 and then remained in the

$900,000 range for 1999 and 2000. Now it's down again

for 2001..... Interesting.....who stopped giving $

....and why?

Brady's right you really need to be an

accountant--preferably one knowledgeable in non-profit

accounting to really analyze this document.
