is yahoogroups the same as egroups (escribe.com)? i notice that

messages posted on one goes directly onto the other as well, but then

on the main page for rosacea support on yahoo , it says escribe has

175,000 archived messages or something.. whereas yahoo seems to have

around 40,000. are some messages missing from one or the other? just

wondering, thanks.

I can't explain the discrepancy in the message number, but I believe the

answer is yes. I have been on another mailing list for years, and it used to

be a different domain before egroups - I can't even remember what. Then the

ownership went over to egroups and later on to yahoo. Every switch meant

quite a hassle - the old ID had to pointed to the new one and it did not

always go smoothly. I am not exactly computer illiterate and I knew I did

not do anything wrong, but the system had its glitches and it was very

frustrating.

Hi,

I've been with this discussion group almost from the beginning. I

joined in mid-November 1998 and I believe this group started on

November 5, 1998.

This discussion group used to be on egroups until Yahoo bought them

in 2000 (i'm not sure of the exact time this happened), and our

discussion group was moved to Yahoo Groups.

Our discussion group has over 40,000 messages. Message #1 was created

when the group was first formed in October 1998, and we've counted

each message that we've received sequentially by one.

Escribe may have 175,000 messages in total in their archives for

message boards, but that includes other message boards not just ours.

Here's a link to the first ever message on this discussion board. If

you keep going through the messages, you'll see that it does go to

41,000+.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-support/messages/1

I hope that helps!

All correct, just filling in the missing bits ;

the group was started as rosacea-support@... they then created

themselves as eGroups, as a startup company (if you ask for

http://www.makelist.com you get redirected to groups.yahoo.com). They were

successful as a startup because they got bought out by Yahoo!

None of the changes from makelist to egroups to yahoo resulted in a change

of message indexing. What did complicate things was the requirement to get

a Yahoo!ID to register via the web site, not always smooth for everyone.

Also over time eGroups change the way we logged in as they scaled the

operation to thousands of groups.

The eScribe site is a backup archive of messages starting from March 26

1999. Their search facility is much better than yahoo's. yahoo's is much

more superficial - only indexing the first x bytes of each message, and

only the last y messages. X and Y are never disclosed - I don't know what

they are. They are up to 37,000 messages, so about 3,000 are missing from

eScribe.
