Guest guest
I need some insight from others on SCD and since I also use LDN, thought I would post there too! So here is what's going on, I am looking at having a hysterectomy on 3/11 at Mayo Clinic. I have been having a low pelvic pain for about a year and was just diagnosed with an inflamed fallopian tube on the right side and an abscess. I am to take Flagyl and Levaquin for three weeks, then a three week break, then surgery. They were going to do surgery sooner but I have a trip to Vegas planned the last week of February and my doctor is in Haiti the last two weeks of February. Well, I have been on the antibiotics for a week and a couple days and my guts are so messed up. I am scared of putting myself into a Crohn's flare. Not sure what to do but if I go off the antibiotics, I will risk infection. I got a cold on Thursday and stopped taking the antibiotics for four doses because I was so drained. The pelvic pain returned and I started getting a low fever. I jumped back on the antibitoics but am so scared of what it is doing to my guts. I have gassy loose stools about two or three times a day. Anybody have any advice? Encouragement? Thanks, Crohn's - SCD and LDN Hotmail: Trusted email with Microsoft’s powerful SPAM protection. Sign up now. Guest guest
Not sure if it matters how long you've been on SCD or not, but i've been on SCD about 8 months and I had to take antibiotics for strep throat all last week. It totally KILLED my insides. I knew it was going to happen and I was prepared for it. I loaded up on the prescriptions so I wouldn't have to run out and get them later. I only took the antibiotics for half the time of what they told me to and It worked just fine. Now, i'm on the recovery and it is twice as fast as the last time I went on antibiotics and wasn't on SCD. While I was taking the antibiotics I stopped taking any meds I was on (asacol) for my UC because it's worthless if the antibiotics are going to cause a big flare which they did. It was just wasting money,If you're anything like me, you'll have a bad flare from the antibiotics and once you can go off them you'll recover relatively quickly. I started drinking apple cider vinegar (about a shot glass worth) along with taking Oregano Oil and making alot of yogurt then drinking it plain (no honey or anything) throughout the day. I tried to get as much plain yogurt in me on an empty stomach as possible and eat a banana with it so i'm sending food for the bacteria down with them. (bananas are a Pre-Biotic aka bacteria food).I'm 4 days into no antibiotics and taking oregano oil, apple cider vinegar, and lots of yogurt on an empty stomach. I also tried the vitamin E enema thing but i'm iffy on if that's doing anything. I also went back on my full doses of meds ( 16 asacol pills a day and cort enemas at night) but I will taper off quickly once I get this flare under control which is already almost killed.I hope this makes sense... I kinda jumped around alot writing it because i'm in a hurry. Guest guest
I don't think I can stop taking the antibiotics. I am not even sure if I will be able to go without them during the three weeks before surgery. So frustrating. I may have to do the surgery ahead of time and lose out of the Vegas trip. Thanks for your input. I am going to supplement with acidophilus and s.boullardii while I am on the antibiotics to try to help counteract the effects. Not sure what else to do. Guest guest
I read somewhere to drink 3 cups of SCD yogurt 2 hours after you take a dose of antibiotics. That may help....Good luck!! Guest guest
--it's not a good idea to stop taking the antibiotics (abx) halfway through--esp with strep. Strep infections cause such morbidity throughout the body, that if you don't eradicate, you run the risk of long term heart problems, post strep arthritis, scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, etc. , unfortunately, Levaquin is one of the abx that predisposes to C. difficile, which causes pseudomembranous colitis. For us IBD'ers. it is more severe of a problem. Perhaps you can call your MD and explain this and ask for Cipro ( related to Levaquin) or, ask for an IM ( shot in the butt muscle) of a comparable abx to bypass the gut and relieve some symptoms. Explain you are going on a trip. It is not a good idea to skip abx doses, you run the risk of allowing the bugs not yet eradicated to become resistant to the abx you are taking and then they are no longer effective. It is important to tell your MD the symptoms are so bad that you stopped for 4 days. Please discuss this with your MD and do some problem solving with them, because this will only snowball. Guest guest
I got wal-mart brand apple cider vinegar a long time ago so that's what I uaed. It probably doesn't do anything but I figured it was better than nothing and what have I got to lose?I didn't even give it a thought that apple cider vinegar would have anything else in it, but I just checked and there aren't any ingredients listed. Only says it's been diluted with water to 5% acidity, so it's legal. I can't imagine a company making apple cider vinegar and adding natural flavors or other junk... but then again I wouldn't be suprised either.I'm not a doctor so obviously I can't say how long is long enough for the antibiotics, but my personal opinion is that it depends on when you catch it. I got strep twice in a row and the second time I caught it when it was just barely a tickle in my throat. I took antibiotics for 2 days and it was gone for good. Other times my throat closed up and I was on antibiotics the entire length. I usually take them until my throat is not sore at all, and then 2 days after that just to make sure. I've heard 2 different reasons why you shoudl take them all. The first is that it can come back like you said, and the second is so that someone else doesn't get it after you're all better. So, that's a gamble you'll have to decide if you want to take or not. Take them all and get it over with all at once, or risk stopping early and possibly having to take them again later....A little update - I didn't have strep throat after all, it was either some other type of bacterial infection or a virus that made my throat nasty.-UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 7 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 5 pills a day> To: scdguy26@...> Subject: RE: OT Antibiotics> Date: Sun, 31 Jan 2010 21:22:47 -0600> > ,> > what kind of apple cider vinegar do you use? Guest guest
Terry, thanks for the info. I knew of some of that but not everything. If I get strep again i'm just going to the ER where they have the antibiotic butt shot That way no oral antibiotics and i'm good to go.On a side note, both the rapid test and cultured test came back neg for strep, so it was either a virus or some other type of infection that mirrored strep. I'm sure i'll post my frustrations if I get it again, and then i'll have nobody to blame but myself for only finishing half the bottle!-UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 7 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 5 pills a dayTo: BTVC-SCD From: TERUM359@...Date: Sun, 31 Jan 2010 22:35:34 -0500Subject: Re: OT Antibiotics --it's not a good idea to stop taking the antibiotics (abx) halfway through--esp with strep. Explain you are going on a trip. Guest guest
I have heard that the reason behind taking the full dose of antibiotics with strep was because of the reproductive cycle of the bacteria. Antibiotics interrupt one component of reproduction- like building the cell membrane- which causes the bacteria to die, or slow down growth (depending on the bacteria). Since all the bacteria are not at the same stage of cell reproduction, one has to take them for as long as it takes all of them to go through one cycle. Sometimes one feels better quickly because a few doses kills off a large number of them, but the extended doses are for the ones that stick around. This was the original thought about how long to take antibiotics, but some studies have debated this and sometimes a shorter course is OK for some situations, but to be safe, I think the standard is to stick to the recommended number of days. Guest guest
Eileen, It is postulated, not proven, that strep can attack the basal ganglia in children and cause OCD--This is the idea behind PANDAS. It is postulated this does not happen in adults as they have a more mature immune system. Terry > > > > --it's not a good idea to stop taking the antibiotics (abx) halfway through--esp with strep.
