Guest guest
Saw a doc today for a treatment called Scenar. In reviewing my history she stated that I may be suffering from these symptoms due to a severe intestinal infection, perhaps Giardia, that I had in West Africa many years ago. She said that the bacterium could have survived in the appendix and started overpopulating the gut after my first pregnancy. If the Skenar treatment doesn't yield the expected results, she suggests I try course of Flagyl (antibiotic) to treat the infection. She said it wouldn't kill off L. acidophilus in the GI tract because it targets gram-negative bacteria. Any experiences with Flagyl or combining Flagyl with SCD? Thanks, Lilian " IBS " -C 10+ years, SCD 3 1/2 months

Guest guest
I think I would want stool cultures or some idea before trying Flagyl. My GI thought my symptoms a year ago were due to C dif, and I took a course of Flagyl. It was horrible. I was nauseated the whole time and it made me feel terrible. I thought it was the antibiotic from Hell. Don't take it unless you really have to. Just my two cents, PJ > > Saw a doc today for a treatment called Scenar. Guest guest
Lilian,I agree with PJ, I wouldn't take an antibiotic 'just to see if it helps.' I would want to know it was the right medication for the target before taking anything. That's kind of like a mechanic blindly replace car parts 'to see if it helps!' ; )You can read up on it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flagyl There is a section regarding Giardia there too about midway down the page. It does appear that Flagyl specifically targets Giardia, if that is truly your problem.AmeliaHusband UC 9 years, SCD 19 monthsLDN 3 mgTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wed, February 3, 2010 4:34:20 AMSubject: Re: Flagyl I think I would want stool cultures or some idea before trying Flagyl. Guest guest
I don't know how much info. you want. I had giardiasis years ago. I still had symptoms after being treated with atebrine (sp?) and flagyl. I don't like to take any meds. though, so you won't get an unbiased opinion from me. I think the treatment is worse than the cure. I think there are other things you can do to kill giardia naturally, but I don't remember what they are - maybe search on internet. Anyway, I still fight the same issues today that I had then. I think that I already had a problem before I had the giardia (if giardia was really my problem) and the giardia just made me realize I couldn't ignore it. I believe I had the giardia, I just don't know if that was what was causing my problems. After the meds., I was sensitive to pretty much everything I ate. If the dr. had known to tell me to try this diet then, I think I would have been better years ago. Too bad they don't know anything about diets. By the way, I've read that some people have giardia but never have problems with it. Guest guest
> > I think I would want stool cultures or some idea before trying Flagyl. Thanks all for the input! The reason I got the script without a stool culture etc is that I don't have insurance, so can't really afford a complete work-up with scope, blood tests and stool cultures. And believe me, I am SO the last person to use antibotics (I don't think anyone who knows me would believe I'm even considering this!) but this is desperation speaking here :^). Well, I'm going to just hang on to the script for now and see if the Scenar treatment can help restore the balance, while still on the SCD, of course. Thanks again, and thanks for the links, Amelia! Guest guest
I took a run of Flagyl in Dec. 2008. What a nightmare! I agree with PJ. I remember telling my family that it was a wicked antibiotic! I had Diverticulitis with an abscess. I took Flagyl and Cipro and also a run of Levaquin. They cured everything and just about took me out in the process! Lord I hope I don't EVER have to do that again. ~Tonya~

Guest guest
Oh gosh. I hate to say it, but when I had to take flagyl for my " parasites " (it was actually UC, later to be discovered) those were the worst 10 days of my life. It made me horribly sick to my stomach, and then the fennergen I had to take for the nausea just knocked me out, so I basically spent all day on the couch with the barf bucket. Of course, everyone's different and I might just be weird, but if there's something else you can take I would take that instead! Alyssa =) > > Saw a doc today for a treatment called Scenar. Guest guest
Alyssa, I have the same story. They thought I had C diff at first. I had some D with a little B in it, but felt OK. The 10 days of flagyl put me over the edge. I felt like cr*p. When that did not work they put me on other meds. I never really bounced back until a few months on SCD. Guest guest
Alyssa, Have you had a serious stool test done recently or a rectal swab? I'm just wondering - because the way your symptoms are hanging on, could be you have some esoteric kind of bacteria/yeast. Guest guest
Alyssa, Have you had a serious stool test done recently or a rectal swab? I'm just wondering - because the way your symptoms are hanging on, could be you have some esoteric kind of bacteria/yeast. Mara > The flagyl actually made my symptoms (bloody D) go away for 5 months, but then they came back full force in September 08 and I had a colonoscopy. And the rest is history =) > > Alyssa =) > > > >>>> >>>> Saw a doc today for a treatment called Scenar. In reviewing my history she stated that I may be suffering from these symptoms due to a severe intestinal infection, perhaps Giardia, that I had in West Africa many years ago. Guest guest
When I first got ill, they had me on Cipro and Flagyl together. I was already sick, the two add-ons--I lost over 20 lbs. I hate Flagyl but I've heard it helps some people with flares. Guest guest
Mara, I actually just had a stool test done to check for pathogens and other gut bacteria. The only thing abnormal was that I had no growth of Lactobacillus =( Everything else seemed fine! Thanks for the thought though. Alyssa =) > >>>> > >>>> Saw a doc today for a treatment called Scenar.
