Guest guest
A little history... I had to take antibiotics 2 weeks ago for a threoat infection I had and now i'm flaring uncontrollably since then. I thought at first it was a quick thing because of the antibiotics I took but it just won't quit and it's all blood/Mucus. Gross.... I've tried going back on full strength of asacol which is 12 pills a day, along with steroids and nothing has changed yet. Usually that takes care of a flare overnight (it's been 5 nights so far)I've gone back to intro foods but nothing seems to help. It really makes me doubt whether not enjoying all the foods I used to love is worth being on this diet. I know people on SCD have gotten bad flares before, but i don't know what to think now. I know I want to try LDN (got a link for their msg board?) in the near future once I get health insurance again. Maybe it's stress... new job, ended a long term relationship, and bad flare up. ugh, I guess i'm just complaining. I'm so tired of cooking all the time.-UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 7 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 5 pills a day Hotmail: Trusted email with Microsoft’s powerful SPAM protection. Guest guest
, so sorry to hear about the rough things you're going through. Could the compounded effect of all that stress be contributing? Do you have any ways of managing stress? I know that regular meditation is helpful for me in many ways. A friend of mine with a related degree has told me about " pleasure scheduling " , a disciplined way of making sure you have enough + times in your day and not only - ones. Sounds like a good idea to me (maybe I should take heed, too?!) Apologies if none of this applies, juts thought I'd bring it up as the brain and gut are more than connected. Here's to brighter days ahead! Lilian > > > A little history... I had to take antibiotics 2 weeks ago for a threoat infection I had and now i'm flaring uncontrollably since then. Guest guest
Highly stressfull situations definitely play a role for me. I had another bad flare that lasted about 4 days (came quick and hard and left just as quick) when a close family member died. So, definitely connected. Guest guest
I'm so sorry to hear =( I can understand doubting the diet, especially at a time like this, but still, I don't think you should go off of it. Because even if it doesn't control your symptoms now, and you need conventional meds now, what other long term treatment option do you have other than the diet? I know nobody on here would want to stay on immunosuppressants for the rest of their life, or even asacol or any other milder drug. I would just do what your GI recommends now for getting this flare under control, but keep on with the diet so that you have hope of getting off those meds eventually. There's still hope =) I think it's funny you mention missing your old foods. I do occasionally, but more often than that I'm jealous of all the recipes you post that I can't have!! I guess we all (including myself) take whatever we have for granted, no matter how much or how little that is, because I'm sure I can eat things that others can only dream of having. Oh, have you tried detox baths? A ton of broth? Cod liver oil? Small things, but if you do enough of them they might help. I hope you get better soon!! Alyssa =) > > > A little history... Guest guest
, I'm sorry I would bet on the antibiotics and the stress. LDN sounds like a good next step. Breaking SCD would make everything worse. Hang in there, PJ > > > A little history... Guest guest
, I have been on this diet 6 months and every month I have had a flare up. The last one was on Jan 14 and took a week to get under control using Prednisone. When ever I get a flare I want to give up SCD but I know I would really regret having to go back to square one wnen I am six months in. I have also just started a bigger dose of S Boulardii and I think this will help prevent flares and let me eat more SCD foods and finally put some weight back on. Feel Better. K. Guest guest
Hi , So sorry to hear about your bad flare....You really have my sympathies. Did you try going back to the intro diet? DEF. consider that, please. Your gut needs a rest. Also, what's your " healthy bacteria " situation like? Could you eat yogurt before? As I'm sure you know, the antibioitcs wipes out the good as well as the bad bacteria and you'll need to replenish the good ones. My heart goes out to you. I hope you will soon be better. Usually that takes care of a flare overnight (it's been 5 nights so far) > > > > > > I've gone back to intro foods but nothing seems to help. Guest guest
, I'm sorry you had to use antibiotics. I can bet they caused your flare and yes, stress doesn't help. You probably have major yeast overgrowth now. Please don't give up on SCD. It seems you were making progress prior to the flare. I can understand the frustration with your situation but hopefully SCD will get you through this. The first few months on SCD are really tough both in terms of changes in your digestion, feeling hungry and tired all the time and all the cooking demands. I promise you it gets easier. A time will come when you wouldn't so much as consider cheating. For now, I would lower my carb intake (this has helped me DRAMATICALLY), take tons of probiotics and get lots of sleep. Also, visit Crohns Boy's website. He has some great advice for dealing with flares that has helped me immensely. I really hope you feel better soon. Guest guest
Been on the diet about 8-9 months so far. I cut out yogurt/cheesecake for a few days and no more mucous in my throat. I am drinking alot of yogurt to try and get alot of the probiotics since I was on antibiotics. I'll have to tone that down a bit now that i'm off the antibiotics.Exercise has seemed to make me worse when i'm not in a flare, but stress reliefe is more important to me right now so i'm exercising every other day.-UC - 1+ yearsSCD - 7 months 100% strict and 4 months restricted diet.Asacol - 5 pills a dayTo: BTVC-SCD From: alcibiades@...Date: Wed, 3 Feb 2010 23:12:14 -0500Subject: Re: bad flare, no end in sight A little history... Also, how long have you been on the diet now? Just curious -though I know this was triggered by the antibiotics. Gross.... Sorry to hear about all the stress factors and bad stuff. Can you try doing a little yoga to help with the stress - or some other kind of exercise that you enjoy.
