Starting SCD: Cheese in the intro phase?

I've been on the intro diet for a grand total of 1 day, and I had a question

regarding milk products in the early stages of the diet.

In the " intro " diet, what milk products are allowed? From BTVC, it seems that

she recommends eating a bunch of SCD yogurt and the cheesecake recipe and

what-not, but looking at Pecanbread.com, for example, it seems that they prefer

holding off on Yogurt for ~3 months. Is this because Pecanbread.com is more

focused on Autism, and Autism is more sensitive to Lactose?

If some milk products are allowed in the intro phase, can I use SCD-legal

cheeses?

(Some background)

I'm 26, without a diagnosis (not for lack of tests and effort), but with

IBS-like symptoms, lots of weight loss, etc. I came to SCD in a sort of weird

route, in that I went on a strict ketosis (<20g carb) diet several months ago

and found that the canker sores that I had ~90% of the time for the last 7 years

went away entirely. While my intestinal issues hadn't gone away entirely, it

was enough to keep me off of carbs until I came across info on SCD (which is

LESS restrictive than my last diet) and started reading up on that.

I'm a newbie and can't answer your question about milk on the intro diet, but I

am familiar with SCD for autism and just wanted to clarify that kid with autism

are frequently very sensitive to the casein (protein) in milk, not the lactose.

The 24 hr yogurt still contains casein, but the lactose is gone from the long

fermenting process.

My suggestion would be, since you were already on a very strict low carb diet for several months, you are probably o.k. adding cheese and yogurt in fairly quickly. I would, however, use moderation until you are certain you can handle them. It sounds like you would need the probiotic benefit from the yogurt, unless you were using probiotic capsules while on the low carb diet. This is because you have killed off the bad bacteria, but in the process (without probiotics or 24 hour yogurt) you gave extra room for the yeast to grow. You might not have a problem with yeast, but I would at least keep an eye out for signs of it if you weren't taking probiotics. Especially if you hit a wall in your healing progress.AmeliaHusband UC 9 years, SCD 19 monthsLDN 3

SCD-legal dairy (yogurt, dry curd cottage cheese, hard cheeses) is

typically lactose free. The difference between the Pecanbread web site

and what is recommended in BTVC is that many children with autism have

been casein-free (because one of the dietary recommendations prior to the

use of SCD for autism was gluten-free and casein-free) and their parents

are naturally concerned about reintroducing something which has been

demonstrated to be a problem for many autistic children. It was

determined that, after the removal of the polysaccharides so common in

GF/CF diets, gut healing could occur, and the children could often

tolerate SCD-yogurt because the long fermentation modified the milk

protein to make it more digestible. It was also determined that goat's

milk yogurt worked better with children with autism, because the protein

structure is different.

>> If some milk products are allowed in the intro phase, can I use

SCD-legal cheeses? <<

Absolutely. One of my favorite dishes was (and is) peeled steamed

zucchini with home-shredded cheddar cheese. I have a hard time thinking

casein-free because I'm a cheese-o-holic.

The intro. diet doesn’t allow much dairy, because the

purpose of it is to eat very easy-to-digest foods, and dairy can be

problematic. Elaine allowed the SCD cheesecake, but many people on the

intro. diet don’t tolerate it. Same with the 24-hour yogurt, you

can try it but it is probably wiser to wait until after the intro. diet.

Pecanbread focuses on children dealing with autism, and it’s

best to avoid casein, so the recipes and information on that site don’t

include dairy. So it’s not the lactose that is a concern, but

rather the casein.

I would put cheeses into the category of trying a small amount

in the 3rd or 4th week on SCD – but all depends on

your symptoms. Some people can’t touch cheese for months, if not

years – others can eat cheese in the 2nd week. Same with

yogurt and the cheesecake.

As you’ll find out, we all have to go through a

testing process to figure out which permitted foods our own bodies are ready to

tolerate.
