Guest guest
" I am concerned because he is starting the coughing while on the Prednisone. " Cathy, from what I undestand about RP, if you have tracheal involvement, you'll always have a cough and hoarse voice, this has to do with the inflammation of the tracheal rings that hold everything together (open). The cough is usually dry. For the last two weeks, my barking cough has been productive too, but i think I had some kind of cold. Another thing, I read somewhere -- I'm sorry I can't point it out to you -- that Prednisone doesn't really help inflammation in the trachea. I'm on 30mg of Prednisone right now and on 12.5mg of Methotrexate (MTX) and increasing to 15 in about 2 wks. My pulmonologist said that the MTX should help decrease the swelling. I was on high doses of Pred about 2 mos ago and it didnt' help my throat problems. " has the excersize really helped you with weight management from the prednisone " Midge, I'm 5 ft tall and I can't tell you if exercise has helped me because I don't have anything to compare it to. All I can say is that exercise has at least helped me maintain my weight. I've gained btn 10-15lbs since last year. For you and me, even 5lbs on our frame can make us pretty hefty. I insisted on working out while on prednisone (since July last year), except for the past 2 months because the disease has spread to my throat, making any kind of exertion really difficult for me to breathe. I notice if I take more than 30mgs of Prednisone, I want to eat everything in sight. Up until 2 mos ago, I was doing high cardio stuff mainly taking spinning classes or using the Precor/elliptical machine (combo stepmaster/bicycle/treadmill) and I was at the gym everyday. I also worked on free weights. Lately I've gone to the gym 3x in 2 months and I mainly stick to the treadmill (slow), some weights and if can handle it, the precor/elliptical machine. Midge, I would try to exercise, even if it means only stretching everyday, because I think it would help us in the long run with managing our disease. Have you tried swimming? With my breathing problems, I've been afraid to. ===== When choosing the lesser of two evils, I always like the one I haven't tried. -- Mae West __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Midge, My name is Christy and I too have RP.. I don't write often unless I read something an think I can give some advice to someone. I'm 5 ft 1' and I have a weight problem however I do try and lose and keep things under control. What I have found to be most beneficial for me is the water aerobics. No stress on the joints and it is a workout more than we can imagine. Try and find a class in your area. Have a good holiday. Guest guest
, Is there anything else that you do for your breathing problems? His cough is productive because he has pulmonary problems too. That is one of the reasons it took so long to diagnose. We see the specialist on the 18th. Hopefully he will have something to try.
