Guest guest
I think I have a cold, since my sinuses felt all clogged yesterday and I woke up with a horrid sore throat this morning. I don't really want it to turn into anything, so my question is: do you think I should take oil of oregano to help fight it off? I've never taken it before, and I wasn't sure how it would work with me being on an immunosuppressant. Does it help fight viruses/bacteria by strengthening your immune system (which would be counterproductive, it seems like) or by actually killing the bacteria/virus/fungus itself? Any other advice on how to get rid of a cold/sore throat is appreciated! Since I'm in school I can't go on full intro foods, but I drink a big mug of broth every day. Any other tips? THanks! Peace =) Alyssa 15 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008 SCD June 2009 (restarted) Azathioprine 50 mg 1x per day Prednisone 40 mg 1x per day

Guest guest
You might consider taking the supplement N-A-C. It is an antioxidant and helps protect the lining of the lungs from viral invasions during a cold or flu. It worked wonders for my dh when he had the H1N1 virus. I don’t know about the OoO. I don’t think it would hurt to take it. What about coconut oil? Hope you feel better. Guest guest
Alyssa- I hope Imuran kicks in for you. As I said, I had a great time while on Imuran with apparently no noticeable side-effects. It should be very helpful for you since you're careful about diet etc, which I wasn't. These should together get you back on track. -Andy.

Guest guest
Something I learned about NAC from Pecanbread moms is that it could potentially feed yeast. That is why I stopped taking it - being the yeast monger that I am. > > You might consider taking the supplement N-A-C. Guest guest
I very rarely get colds after starting SCD but when I do it helps for me to cut out dairy completely (so there's less mucus) and drink a lot of fresh juices to up my vitamin C. I'll also do combos with a little ginger (last night I used 1/2 a pineapple and about 1/4 inch of ginger - fabulous!). I hope you feel better soon!! Guest guest
I use USNEA (herb) for sinus and upper respiratory issues. I do NOT think it's an immune stimulator like the Echinacea/Goldenseal or Astragalus, other herbs which are excellent **IF** you don't have immune issues. Claire SCD 7 weeks RE: Oil of Oregano? Guest guest
Oil of Cajeput (by Pure Herbs, Inc.) is another excellent product to rub on your chest and sinuses. It does wonders for congestion and it makes a decent bug repellent, too. It's a particular type of tea tree oil but does not smell like the regular tea tree oils. http://store.everythingherbs.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD & Store_Code=EH & Product_Code=4CAJ Pure Herbs, Inc., also make a product called Five Oils which is wonderful for colds. Guest guest
One thing I always do is use normal saline solution for my nose. You mix up 1/4 teaspoon salt in 1/2 cup water or same proportions to other amounts of water. You need a bit hotter than lukewarm for it to dissolve, but lukewarm to use. A neti pot is probably the best but I've spend years just holding some in my hand. Do one nostril several times, and the other. Done several times a day and particularly at bedtime can really help clear the nose, and I read recently that the salt is therapeutic as well. Guest guest
Something my acupuncturist told me about for colds is this: ginger tea. You slice fresh ginger root, oh, maybe an inch piece. Take six green onions, cut them up. Put both in a pan and cover with water, and simmer gently 15 minutes or so. Throw out the vegetation and drink the tea. The ginger is always good and something about the fresh green onions has healing power. Not that big onions aren't healthy but this is better for a cold. It also tastes good especially with a bit of honey.
