Kathy,Isn't it possible to have an iron injection? I know some have mentioned an IV, but I think you can get both the B12 and the iron as an injection at the doctor's office.AmeliaHusband UC 9 years, SCD 20 monthsLDN 3 mgTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Wed, February 24, 2010

I am a frequent reader of this wonderful group, but a not so frequent contributor. I have CD and have been on SCD strictly for one year now. I have been seeing an integrative nurse practitioner who has done some testing that has uncovered both nutritional deficiencies and candida overgrowth. In an attempt to eradicate the candida, she put me on nystatin, which for me was a disaster. I ended up plunging into a chronic fatigue relapse (I suffered with CFS for years before being diagnosed with CD). At first I assumed my reaction was just die off, but unfortunately I haven't rebounded at all. I saw the NP again yesterday and got the results of more bloodwork that showed low B12 and very low ferritin levels, which I know are really no surprise to people with CD.

I am looking for advice on how to increase these ferritin levels. I know this has been talked about before, but since it didn't pertain to me, I wasn't tuned in enough. Sorry!

Thanks in advance for the help.

Yes, it's quite possible. The quickest way to build up, if you are really

low, is an IV of iron. I have had DH giving me B12 shots for a

couple of decades and until menopause, iron was included in them.

You can have this in the doctor's office, of course, but if there's

someone competent to give you the shots, or you don't mind doing them

yourself (in the thigh instead of the rear) it is quite feasible at home.

And a lot less time and effort than having to make a trip to the doctor's

just for a shot. The IV is a different matter, of course, must be in the

office situation.

Isn't it possible to have an iron injection? I know some have

There should be a list of high-iron foods in the archives or google it.

Don't mix dairy with iron, it binds it.  Vitamin C helps you to absorb iron.

Some foods are liver pate, shrimp, oysters, fresh cherries, spinach and other greens which some make into smoothies.  Meat broth from beef shanks, add some ACV to it to leach the vitamins/minerals.  If you can't do a lot of citrus, drink a lot of grape juice that's been diluted.  It's kind of like an iron diet within the SCD.

I was able to bring my levels up taking a prescription iron pill (illegal) but OTOH, since it's a new generic, I've been absolutely miserable and the extreme opposite of the constant 'd'.  I take Miralax twice a day.  Doc had me on one prescription iron and one multi with iron per day.  Both illegal but I've built up antibodies from blood transfusions so in November, they were unable to find a blood match.  Either way, there has to be a natural way to avoid all the c*ap that goes with transfusions and extreme iron overload.

Good luck.  Sometimes iron is necessary via transfusion/IV/shots but try to find a way via nature imho.  BTW, I've read iron shots can 'tattoo' you, check into that before trying.  Does anyone know?

I had iron in my B12 shots for years (in my rear) and as far as I know, I

never got tattooed! I think DH would have commented if I had.

I just read that as a side effect, never had the iron shots. For some

reason, doctors have never offered that.

Kathy,

do you know why the nystatin didn't work out? We are going to put my daughter

on it on Monday and I have such reservations (also Alinia), I want to do

everything possible to avoid complications. She also has low iron, but I

haven't started that supplement. Is that something you have heard should be

done?

I will post separately about this too, I'm curious about others' experiences

with it, I think I've seen other posts about it not going well...

Thank you,
