Guest guest
Dawn has been particularly adament that I not take Vioxx while I am on methotrexate. I sat down with my pharmacist yesterday and asked him if he knew why. He printed out all the warnings that come in the prescription plus the package insert on both products. Neither has a warning against it. I am very confused. Before I ask my rheumy again (he said there was no problem), can anyone tell me what the problem is? I know you all do better research than the doctors or pharmacists, so can anyone provide me with a reason why I should not take these two products together? I'm certain Dawn knows what she is talking about, but I need more info and facts before I question my doctor again. Please help! (Think they consider low dosage for RA under 20mg) BUT this is what it says under Drug Interactions: " Fatal reactions have developed in people taking metho with a NSAID. Do not combien methotrexate and an anti inflammatory or antiarthritic drug...even over the counter drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen..without doctor's knowledge. Asprin and other salicylates, anticancer drugs, etretinate, procarbazine, probenecid, and sulfa drugs can increase the therapeutic and toxic effects of methotrexate. Well, that is my 2 cents..LOL Just thought I'd let you know what the book says... Guest guest
Judy, Vioxx is classified as a non-steroidal antiinflamatory drug. There is a very CLEAR warning in my 2001 Nursing Drug Reference book that anyone on Methotrexate MUST NOT take any NSAIDS because of the POTENTIAL FOR FATAL INTERACTIONS!! If you look up the drug Vioxx, or any other NSAID, you will not find this warning. You have to look up Methotrexate to find the warning. Also, this is a warning that has just come out in print in the past year or so-- so it is a fairly new warning. I am sure that after a certain number of deaths, the researchers began piecing this together. I am VERY surprised that the pharmacist could not find this in print-- he should know this!! PLEASE, don't take these 2 drugs together! Guest guest
Judy, Arthrotec is also classified as a non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug! There are so many new drugs out for arthritis right now that there should be several for you to choose from. Ask your MD when you go--although it concerns me that he/she thought it was ok to take Methotrexate and Vioxx. Let me see if I can find out the names of some of the news one for you. I will ask some of my patients which ones they like. I will let you know what I find out. I have arthritis in by shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands, hips, knees , ankles, feet, and especially worse in my back (the result of three back surgeries). When he tried me on Celebrex, within about 5 days I was unable to get up from a chair (straight-backed with arms). So God knows that I need the antiinflamatories. And so long as I am being monitored so frequently, any changes would be noticed immediately. I know it's a risk, but I feel it is one I need to take, I need to be able to walk. Thank you all so much for worrying, but I think I have to stick with my doctor, he keeps me moving and free of flares (usually). OK?
