Guest guest
Has anyone had liver problems along with their gut issues? I went to see a doctor today who examined me. My liver, which has been giving me pain for a couple of years now, was very tender when he pushed on it and also the upper gut. I will be having an ultrasound next month. I'm wondering if SCD would eventually heal the liver as well as the gut. I'm also going to be doing the liver cleanse again and try and get rid of more stones. He told me to take Pepsid AC twice a day which I will ignore because I already have extremely low levels of HCL. I'm noticing less bloating and seem to have digestive upset under control after almost 3 weeks. So maybe, given enough time, the liver will benefit as well? Guest guest
OH yes! Totally normal. Overgrowth and die-off both tax the liver. It has to process all the junk in your body! Guest guest
Darlene You know my background by now, so I won’t go into that again [grin]. My experience has been that time on SCD has helped stabilize my chronic symptoms, and stabilized the deterioration of my pancreas, liver and common bile duct. But it hasn’t “cured” the organs, not that I expected it to. My goal all along has been to stabilize and minimize my symptoms, which SCD provides. My liver and pancreatic functions are tested twice a year in the hopes of catching a problem before it develops into a serious issue. I know my upper GI well enough now that I know when to head for my gastroenterologist if the pain levels and location indicate a problem with the liver and common bile duct… Probably makes a big difference having a dysfunctional upper GI. My Sphincter of Oddi can’t be fixed, so the strain on the liver, pancreas and common bile duct, not to mention my stomach, is chronic. Therefore I have to accept that I will always have problems. Others on SCD have experienced major improvements to the liver and upper GI. I’m just thankful I discovered SCD, as I hate to think where I’d be today without it. Kim M. Guest guest
Thanks Darlene, Dawn and Kim. I've been wondering the same thing. I've had upper right side pain which i think is my gall bladder or liver off and on and I've stopped all supplements for 2 weeks so far (Thanks Jodi and Kim for all of the advice!)and i do feel a little better and think i'm having some die off symptoms that includes the right side pain after i eat. I'm doing the Intro again right now with pureed foods that i can tolerate - i'm on day 2 and will try to do it for 5 days and see how i feel. I've noticed a little increase in the upper right side pain not long after eating since starting so hopefully it's because of the die-off. I'm trying to avoid having my gall bladder out (if that's what the pain is from) as much as possible. Thanks for the info! Guest guest
Hi Dawn, How long did it take for your pain to get better? I know everyone is different but just to get an idea. I have upper right side pain off and on and just went back on the Intro (day 2) with pureed tolerated foods and bone beef broth and it seems to be a little more not long after i eat. I've had the pain off and on for a while but just found out my Vit D-3 can contain maltodextrin (i've been taking it the whole time on SCD) and have stopped it along with all other supplements for 2 weeks now. I'm so glad your pain subsided on SCD! How wonderful! Darlene i hope ours does the same! Guest guest
If you are experiencing RUQ pain (right upper quadrant abdominal pain) following a meal, and it is consistent, then you might be dealing with gallbladder problems or other issues involving the biliary tree (that is the liver, gallbladder, common bile duct). Hopefully you're not also dealing with Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, which I have. I wouldn't wish this on anyone else. Where exactly is your right upper quadrant pain? The location can give us some clues. And what tests have you had of your upper GI? The three things that aggravate my upper GI the most are fat, fiber and seasonings. The symptoms start up within an hour of eating, just about the time the chyme (food) fromthe stomach hits the upper duodenum and Sphincter of Oddi and the common and pancreatic bile ducts are emptying. Symptoms fluctuate in intensity, depending on a lot of different variables, and last about 3 hours (or until you eat again [sigh]) You mention bone broth -- this will have me on the floor in severe pain and nausea within 30 minutes, if my stomach hasn't rejected it sooner. Much too much fat and too gelatinous for my upper GI. I also have similar reactions to regular meat stock, but bone broths cause significantly more severe problems. You might need to stay away from bone broths if your upper GI isn't handling fats. Hopefully this is a temporary issue. I also have to be super careful with seasonings and fiber. They all cause issues, but I've figured out which things cause less symptoms. Sometimes you just have to cope with the lesser of evils. Just some ideas. Feel free to email me offlist if you want more details on the tests I've had. Kim M. Guest guest
Well, mine went away gradually, but it took only a few months to not really notice it anymore without pushing down on the region? I will say that I was ALSO on a strict anti-candida diet, and I think that is KEY. Guest guest
Thanks so much Kim! I'm keeping the Sphincter of Oddi dysfuntion in the back of my mind. My current GI Dr. is real familiar with celiac and gluten sensitivity so i had her do my colonoscopy and first endoscopy back in August 09. Unfortunately she isn't on my insurance so it didn't pay a whole lot. My previous GI Dr. was on my insurance but when i first went to him about my abdominal pain he just prescribed Nexium and didn't do any tests. So i'm going to have to find a new GI Dr. under my insurance plan. The nutritionist i seen a couple of weeks ago gave me some names of a couple of GI Dr's and they're under my plan. It'd be nice to find one who supports SCD but i know there are few of them unfortunately. I'm going to write all of this valuable info. you've provided down to take to my appt. I have a great GP that supports the diet so maybe she can provide some tests for me until i find a GI Dr. i feel comfortable with. My pain is mainly if i take my hand and run it directly under my right breast to my right side, the pain is a little ways down from that. I think it's under my ribs but can't really tell where my ribs end. lol! Sometimes it seems it's within my rib area. My GI Dr. tested me for h. pylori which was negative and she did some biopsy samples of the small intestine for celiac which i had been gluten free for a year and a half so i was hoping that would be ok (although i could still have it). She saw some dried blood and green bile in my stomach during the endoscopy but i had no ulcers. I think i notice when i wake up and my stomach is sore i've had right side pain the day before but i need to pay better attention and write it down. My Mom passed away at age 56 with colon and stomach cancer and she had stomach issues and constipation issues for years before her diagnosis so the DQ8 celiac gene that i carry could possibly come from her but i'm not sure. It's a big possibility i think especailly when i think back to all of her symptoms. Sure wish i knew then what i know now. I'll email you off line to get the tests you've had. I really appreciate it!! I'm glad you've gotten yours under control and you're doing better...you're such an inspiration! > > > > Hi Dawn, > > How long did it take for your pain to get better? I know everyone is different but just to get an idea. I have upper right side pain off and on and just went back on the Intro (day 2) with pureed tolerated foods and bone beef broth and it seems to be a little more not long after i eat. I've had the pain off and on for a while but just found out my Vit D-3 can contain maltodextrin (i've been taking it the whole time on SCD) and have stopped it along with all other supplements for 2 weeks now. I'm so glad your pain subsided on SCD! How wonderful! Darlene i hope ours does the same! > > > > > > SCD - 17 months > > SCD and anti-candida - 4 months > > >
