Guest guest Posted March 14, 2010 Report Share Posted March 14, 2010 So " Sleep tonight " contains: 250mg of: stress-reducing proprietary blend: ashwaganha (withania somnifera) (Sensoril ® brand) root and leaf extract standardized to contain 8% withanolides and L-theanine (suntheanine ® brand). 250 mg of: Cortisol-reducing proprietary blend: mangolia (Mangolia officinalis) bank extract standardized to contain 2% honokiol and 1% mangolol and epimedium (Epimedium koreanum) aerial part extract. 50 mg: phosphatidylserine. Other ingredients: dextrose, cellulose, modified cellulose gum, modified cellulose, magnesium stearate, stearic acid, titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, soy lecithin, vegetable glycerin, and carnauba wax. So...I suppose any of those could be bad! I started taking them again after I took that DHEA stuff for 3 days and my heart was pounding and I was getting adrenaline rushes (and funny butterfly-y feeling in my gut with 7 rounds to the bathroom and more blood that day. I figured if the DHEA stimulated my production of adrenaline and cortisol, and I got really bad, maybe I needed sleep (by 5am) and this stuff (called Sleep tonight) is supposed to cut cortisol production by about 67% in test subjects. At this point my adrenaline levels may be more normalized, so I will try not taking it tonight. I still have a prescription of allegra which I think might have helped the bleeding before - it makes me so groggy the next day, and I have finals this week...but I guess I will figure it out if it have to. I am also taking acyclovir for herpes and prednisone. I really can't afford to take those out and they are the only ones I've taken these last couple days. I am still bleeding more than I had been before. Less times/day. Still don't want to drink water (because it causes pain) but I will try to rehydrate and eat some salt so I want to drink more. I'm going to try eating hardly anything today and see if more rest helps. I have also been fighting colds off and on (just nasal mucous/colored mucous symptoms and maybe fatigue can be attributed to that. I also had to decide whether or not to move 2 days ago, decided to, but that was stressful. Met with the ex-boyfriend yesterday to hash some things out. Also stressful. Also worried about finals. Can that kind of stress really cause more bleeding? What do you guys do when you go into flair? My gastroenterologist doesn't want me to take more prednisone than I already am (5mg/day) because she thinks it is time to do another colonoscopy to see if it is really the UC causing it. She didn't hint at what else she thinks could be causing it. My naturopath really wants the yeast problem taken care of (I have thrush and have probably had candidaitis for several yeast w/o diagnosis), so she wants me to start taking an antifungal. I ate some garlic and onion yesterday to see if that would help. While I don't think it made it worse it is hard to tell since I am still bleeding more/more D/more pain. On the diet, so many additional medicines are forbidden. My cramp-bark tea has helped each time I've had my period - I would get in so much pain and my symptoms would get a little worse. Then I would finally drink the tea and I would feel better cramp-wise the next day. But if that was forbidden too, what I would do to get my body out of stress-response? More prednisone? Neither of my docs wants to see me continue to bleed more by sticking strickly to the diet and avoiding meds. I want to avoid damage to my colon too, and it seems like this is a very complicated process going on. Just feeling a little stuck I guess. I was down to 10mg of prednisone, but I am going to go back to 40 for a week, then 30 for a week, ect. Maybe you can ask your doc if she will put off the colonoscopy until you have the bleeding a little more under control? Unless that's counter productive since she wants to see what's causing it. I would assume any doc would want to stop your bleeding/pain over prolonging it for a test.Some other things that I noticed helped me even though I couldn't keep it up for any extended period of time since I lost too much weight doing it.I ate nothing but meat and drank the broth from when I cooked it in the crock put. I made sure to eat the fat from the meat as well (grass fed). I drank the broth whenever I ate the meat because it gives it a nice flavor and soothed my stomach. I did not eat any cheeses, no yogurt, no juices, no fruit, and no vegetable. I only drank water and had eggs other than the meat. I lasted 2 days doing this (seemed like an eternity!) and then I added some avocado in with this along with the chicken liver/heart from the chickens I was cooking. It helped me.Another thing I do is to soak in a warm/hot bath with 2 cups of epsom salt. This makes a noticable difference overnight. You know, I ebbed off the epsom salt baths these last few days because my skin keeps coming off in my fingernails (don't feel like scratching - it just comes off). I thought maybe it was from the baths, but I found out my doc thinks its from allergies (started with an allergic reaction to mesalamine (asacol) over a month ago. Or from not having enough fats in my diet. I'll try the baths again. Others have told me that yogurt is really important. I am also taking probiotics. Still others have posted that they couldn't tolerate yogurt until several months in. I know the yogurt didn't start the flair, since I wasn't eating any at the time to see if it was what caused D last week. Today I have just had yogurt w/ probiotics, chicken soup broth, and a little bit of cooked pears. I have blood sugar issues so I have to have some carbs. When I did mostly meat/eggs and only carrots (which I think I have issues digesting) with farmer cheese as the intro I did it for 5 days straight and was so drained of energy, plus seeing wavy lines and other weird stuff, plus die off symptoms/feverish, etc. But! I will try it to keep it liquidy and simple for a couple days. I have been drinking way more water today after getting dehydrated the last couple days, maybe that will help too. Thanks! Many of the people with success stories on SCD also were on meds at the beginning. At some point, when very stable, some were able to wean off them, (all against their doctor's advice). I hate meds as much as anyone!! But it seems to me that it is best to heal first- (with or without them, as everyone is different)- and then make a decision about them once one is doing much better. Many of the people with success stories on SCD also were on meds at the beginning. At some point, when very stable, some were able to wean off them, (all against their doctor's advice). I hate meds as much as anyone!! But it seems to me that it is best to heal first- (with or without them, as everyone is different)- and then make a decision about them once one is doing much better. I think you should have some protein with this - no wonder you are exhausted - you are trying to feel good and get healthy on very little food, way below normal. And getting healthy takes a lot of energy. Also, cooked pears are a good choice as apparently, according to Dr. McCandless, yeast don't like them. I read recently somewhere that when you cook carrots it doubles their glycemic index? Not sure what this means to you, but raw carrot juice also kills pathogens.. specifically yeast.I started juicing about 5 carrots (organic) and put a clove of garlic and juiced that with them. You can add or take away the garlic to your taste, but after a few days I got used to it and could use 2 or 3 cloves! I probably shouldn't do the electrolyte drink yet, since it contains a lot of honey, which I can't do because of yeast overgrowth and thrush. I will look into the carrots in a while - I feel like introducing raw foods at this point, even juiced, might be good or bad, but not something I want to mess with while in flair. I'll look into a juicer. I just got some Just Juice blueberry juice - I seem to be ok with blueberries, they give me lots of energy, and they seem to make the yeast go away in my mouth. I ate some chicken liver and avocado today too. I feel better overall even from this morning - I was able to drive my car for the first time in a week! No more blurry/fishtank vision, at least a lot less of it. Cravings are also down today. As per protein, yeah, I was eating more before - today I just took it easy because every time I ate yesterday it was uncomfortable and made me have to go. This afternoon I've been chugging water and feeling okay. It makes sense that the diet isn't a substitute for meds. I was concerned for a while that by taking the prednisone I would be inhibiting my body's ability to heal, but I am not on very much, and maybe without all those supplements I could handle more of it till I get better again. Like Elaine wrote, it's usually two steps forward, one step back. Those steps back are just kinda scary, as I'm sure everyone on here knows. Thank you all for your advice. I'm going to have an epsom salt bath, eat some more chicken liver (I bought hearts too!) and avocado. Maybe some chicken broth/soup later, and some pear. And of course I'll keep taking my meds, just not the supplements for a few more days and see how I feel. Thanks everybody!
