Guest guest
My area does not have a nutritionist/dietician to ask and I know this community is much more knowledgeable about UC than anyone else anyway so I would love some feedback on what others have tried. I am doing well on my SCDiet of 2.5 months. Diarrhea is almost nonexistent but with my diet change I definitely think I need help with digestion. Yes I am soaking nuts and think that has helped but still think a digestive aid would be beneficial. I only eat 1 to 2 oz. of nuts per day along with normal meals of eggs/fish/meat/veggies but the amount of #2 tells me that it's not all being digested. I am a little concerned about Betaine HCL being too acid for my stomach which does NOT LIKE vinegar, lemon, etc. I have ordered another digestive to try-Elite-Zyme Pro Digestive which does not have the Hydrochloric Acid like Betaine HCL. Anyone with experience with digestive aids? Good? Bad?

Guest guest
You can take 1-4 Betaine HCL capsules per meal depending on the size of the meal. Maybe you could just take 1 with a meal and to see how you get on and build up from there. I believe a good digestive enzyme supplement is called Digest Gold by Enzymedica. Steve SCD 3 months. Guest guest
I don’t know if my experience is one that you will also share, but my upper GI doesn’t tolerate vinegar at all, and lemon juice rarely, now that I have a dysfunctional upper GI. And I can’t tolerate any of the digestive enzymes I’ve tried so far. But my reactions to digestive enzymes go beyond a set of digestive symptoms, my immune system also reacts. I would start off slowly and cautiously. Take a low dose at first of any digestive enzyme you try. You may need to experiment with the brand and formulations, trying some with betain HCl and some without. That’s what I do anyway, but so far I haven’t been successful. About once a year I try a new brand with slightly different amounts of ingredients, only to get the same reactions. Frustrating, as I know I can use the digestive enzymes now that I have no gallbladder and my nutrient levels are slowly declining. But, that’s me. [sigh] Kim M. Guest guest
Kim Thanks so much for your reply. Its good to hear of your experience even if it was not a positive one. All information is good. I got the dig. enz. pills today and since they are in capsule form I'm thinking of opening one and starting off with " half " of one. I made the mistake (OK experiment) a few days ago of drinking a glass of water with a capful of apple cider vinegar. Wow what a meltdown. Everything in my colon came screaming out within a couple hours. Haven't had that since starting SCD over 10 weeks ago. I may not need digestive enzymes. It may be that my colon is just not functioning well after 10 years with UC and is not processing food properly therefore too much excreted on a daily basis. Maybe it just takes time to become " normal " again. I'm happier being C than D, that much I know. I'd just like less #2 and more regularity. I take a pro-biotic daily but cannot tolerate yogurt, even homemade. I just started some homemade sauerkraut to get more good biotics inside. Thanks again > > I don't know if my experience is one that you will also share, but my upper > GI doesn't tolerate vinegar at all, and lemon juice rarely, now that I have > a dysfunctional upper GI.
