I've referenced, several times, my adventure of carrots and

chocolate.

You folks may recall that I've mentioned multiple times that when I

started SCD, I did not like, nor did I tolerate carrots, which are

supposed to be an easy-to-digest vegetable. Carrots tasted nasty to

me.

Months into SCD, I decided to give carrots a try again, being bored with

green beans, spinach, and zucchini. Interestingly, carrots tasted good to

me at this point, and did not cause a reaction. So I added carrots to my

repertoire.

About four months later, we went to see a friend who was visiting from

Ireland. Knowing she loved dark chocolate, someone had gifted her with a

bag of Ghiradelli Special Dark Miniatures. But she had no room in

her suitcase for them, so she gave them to us. They sat on a shelf in the

dining room for a very long time, calling my name plaintively.

Finally, I succumbed. I told my husband that I was going to have one

small piece, knowing full well that the result was probably going to be

diarrhea for several days -- but dang, I wanted that chocolate!

I took a piece down and SMELLED it.... ah! the aroma! I unwrapped it

reverently, and SMELLED it again. Ooooooh..... so I bit into it. And it

tasted dreadful. I handed the partly eaten piece to my husband, saying

that there was no point in eating an illegal if it didn't even taste

good. My taste buds and my system were now accustomed to an entirely

different type of eating. Then I wailed, " It's not FAIR! Exchanging

CARROTS for CHOCOLATE?! "

I will note that in the years since then, chocolate does taste good to me

again... but my gut still reacts to it. Which makes it that much

harder to not have. Not if I'm to achieve full healing. (Cocoa butter is

useful...)

I know I'm missing the point entirely <g>, but I never thought Ghiardelli

chocolate was

particularly good. In fact, I thought it was a pretty mediocre, bad chocolate,

a

bit better than Hershey's but not by much.

Lindt chocolate, you might have had a problem. (truffles - yum).

Although even then I bet it would have tasted way too sweet.

Yes, well. As it happened, our friend liked Ghiaradelli. No accounting

for taste. And, as I said, no point in deliberately eating an

illegal (knowing full well the consequences) if it doesn't even taste

good. It certainly SMELLED good!

Do you know, I discovered the existence of Lindt truffles AFTER I went

SCD, so I've never tasted one. But Lindt 85% and 99% bars... ooh.... I'm

so glad Harry took those bars we'd gotten to the office.

Although even then I bet it

would have tasted way too sweet.

Likely.

Do you know, I discovered the existence of Lindt truffles AFTER I went SCD, so I've never tasted one. !!!!!!!!!! Wow, that stinks. Those things are the bomb! I actually don't mind the fact that I'll probably never eat one again, but I'm glad I got to eat one before SCD. One thing I wish I had gotten to eat before SCD is a Panera Bread 'bread bowl,' just for the novelty of getting to eat the soup AND the bowl =) Peace =)Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Azathioprine 50 mg 1x per dayPrednisone 35 mg 1x per day

Actually pre-SCD (after getting ill) I  could not eat chocolate at all.  Recently, I tried that brand in dark chocolate.  I had such pain in my colon area (but no other reaction) that I am so over it.  My gut has felt 'kicked' for several days now.  It hasn't been pleasant.  I'm back on soft foods.  The mind is funny, you think something sounds sooo good then it's such a disappointment either via taste or discomfort afterwards.  Maybe it's just me but I've never missed something and had satisfaction after 'finally' eating it again except maybe with the exception of salads.  Even that has to be in moderation.

Well, funny thing: you don't really miss what you never had.

I never had a Panera bread bowl, but back in <mumble> when we flew

to Denver for a convention, we got in very late, and the only thing

available was chili in a bread bowl. A sour dough bread bowl. It was

delicious.

One of these days, I think I need to see about making some almond flour

bread bowls.

My standard line is that no food is so delicious that it is worth being

sick over.

We're going to a beer-tasting this weekend. Guess who's volunteered to be

the designated driver?
